Elisabeth Gruss and Leger Vogel's Family

Elisabeth Gruss, daughter of Dominique, was born on October 29, 1811 at Guémar, France. She died on March 15, 1873 at Guémar, France. Elisabeth apparently helped to supplement the family income by doing other people's ironing. Her occupation, as listed in both the marriage banns and registration, was that of ironer (repasseuse).

Elisabeth married at Guémar, France on February 11, 1835 to Leger Vogel, son of François Antoine Vogel and Marie Anne Schirm. Their marriage banns were announced on February 1, and February 8, 1835 at the main entrance of the town hall of Guémar. The witnesses to their marriage were: Louis Vogel, Elisabeth's uncle and brother of Catherine Vogel; Maximim Biehler, Elisabeth's brother-in-law; Joseph Buckel, Leger's cousin and Antoine Lasche, Elisabeth's uncle. Elisabeth was twenty-three years and three months and Leger was thirty-one years and four months at the time of their marriage. Leger was born on September 26, 1803 {3 Vendemaire 12} at Guémar, France. The date and place of his death are presently unknown. Leger worked for the railroad as a roadman (cantonnier), a gravel pit guard (garde de carrière) and a crossing guard (garde barriére aux chemins de fer).

Prior to his marriage to Elisabeth, Leger married at Guémar, France on January 30, 1831 to Marie Anne Witz, daughter of Antoine Witz and Elisabeth Stockel. Marie Anne was born July 3, 1806 at Guémar, France and died there on November 1, 1832.

Elizabeth and Leger had seven children, all of whom were born at Guémar, France.

  1. Joseph Vogel was born on March 15, 1836. His marriage registration stated that March 17, 1836 was his date of birth. He worked for the railraod as a gravel pit guard (garde de carrière).

    Joseph married at Guémar, France on January 16, 1864 to Madelaine Laenger, daughter of Alexander Laenger and Madelaine Heinrich. Madelaine was born January 15, 1839 at Guémar, France. Joseph and Madelaine had, at least, five children, all of whom were born at Guémar, France.

    1. Madelaine Vogel was born May 27, 1864.
    2. Joseph Vogel was born April 15, 1866.
    3. Antoine Vogel was born May 25, 1868.
    4. Marie Anne Vogel was born February 20, 1870.
    5. Agatha Barbara Vogel was born August 05, 1872.

  2. Louise Vogel was born on April 30, 1837. She died on May 25, 1837 at Guémar, France.
  3. Louis Vogel was born on June 5, 1838. He died on December 24, 1865 at Chambéry, France. He was serving in the 24th regiment of the French army at the time of his death.
  4. Charles Vogel was born on April 10, 1840. He died at the age of one year and four months on July 26, 1841 at Guémar, France.
  5. Louise Vogel was born on October 28, 1842.

    Louise married at Guémar, France April 29, 1868 to Michel Amand Jeandel, son of Jean Baptiste Jeandel and Marguerite Houvios. He was born October 26, 1838 at Saint-Michel, France. He was employed by the railroad. Louise and Michel had, at least, one child.

    1. Marie Louise Jeandel was born March 11, 1969 at Guémar, France.

  6. Elisabeth Vogel was born on March 30, 1845.
  7. Charles Vogel was born January 11, 1853. He died on February 17, 1853 at Guémar, France.
