Nathaniel Gleason and Marietta Brooks' Family

Nathaniel G. Gleason, son of Jonas, was born on December 15, 1829 in LeRay, New York. The death certificate of his son, Harvey, indicated that Nathaniel was born in the State of Vermont. However, the majority of the United States census returns indicate that he was born in New York State. Nathaniel died on November 6, 1916 at Audubon, Iowa at the age of eighty-six years, ten months and twenty-one days from chronic parenchymatous nephritis following a fracture of the neck of his femur. He was buried on November 8, 1916 in Maple Grove Cemetery at Audubon, Iowa. There is no headstone marking his grave.

On December 24, 1915, Nathaniel fell, breaking his femur. He was taken care of by Helen Mae Gleason, his granddaughter, until she became pregnant. At that time he was placed in the care of Mr. And Mrs. T. J. Stafford, at whose home he died.

During his lifetime, Nathaniel was a carriage painter, buggy maker, a wheelwright, and painter. When fifteen, Nathaniel became a member of the Baptist Church. For a time he was a member of the Episcopal Church and the Disciple Church. On April 4, 1915, he became a member of the Presbyterian Church.

On August 18, 1906, Nathaniel purchased for the sum of Eighty ($80.00) dollars the following parcel of land from his son and daughter-in-law, Walter J. and Lillie A. Gleason, who were living in Minneapolis, Minnesota:

"Lot Ten (10) in Block Thirty-seven (37) in the Town of Audubon, Iowa."

Sometime between 1850 and 1852, Nathaniel married Marietta Brooks at LeRoy, New York. Marietta died sometime after May of 1895 as she is listed in the 1895 Iowa State census. Based on her age as reported in the census, sixty-five, Marietta was born in 1830 in the State of New York. Another indication that Marietta probably died after May of 1895 is the fact that Nathaniel purchased a plot in Maple Grove Cemetery on June 24, 1895 for the sum of six dollars ($6.00).

According to the 1860 United States census return for Jefferson County, New York, Nathaniel and Marietta were living in the Town of Alexandria. Nathaniel was thirty years of age. His occupation was given as that of a carriage painter. His real estate was valued at $150 and his personal estate was valued at $450. Marietta is also thirty years of age. The census only enumerates three of their children.

According to the 1870 United States census for the Town of Alexandria, Nathaniel's personal estate was valued at $860. One again his occupation is listed as that of a carriage painter.

The couple appears in the 1880 United States census for Anita, Iowa in Cass County. This census return shows that both Nathaniel and Marietta are fifty years of age and both were born in New York. The census only enumerates three of their children.

Nathaniel and Marietta had six children. The order of births is based upon information found in the 1870 United States census return for the Town of Alexandria, New York.

  1. Walter J. Gleason was born in August of 1852
  2. Ida Gleason was born about 1854. It appears that she died prior to 1916 in the State of Iowa.
  3. Harvey Brooks Gleason was born on April 5, 1856 at Brockville, Ontario, Canada. He died on September 23, 1924 at Omaha, Nebraska.
  4. Mark W. Gleason was born about 1862 in the State of New York. He is reported to have died in Kansas. According to the 1895 Iowa State census, Mark was a butcher by profession.

Mark married Effie B. Lux, née Bradley, daughter of Alonzo W. Bradley and Jennie A. Bell at Audubon, Iowa on April 3, 1889. Effie was born about 1852 in the State of Iowa. This year is based upon her age, twenty-seven, at the time of her marriage. She died prior to 1895 as Mark is listed as a widower in the 1895 Iowa State census.

  5. Harry Jay Gleason was born on April 2, 1865 the State of New York. He died on 24 April 1921 in Carroll County, Iowa.
  6. Alice Maud Gleason was born about 1869. This year is based upon her age, one year, in the 1870 census. She is reported to have married Mr. Knowles and to have remained in the State of New York when the family migrated west. However, she is enumerated with the family in the 1880 United States Federal census return, which reports that Maud was born in Canada, and the 1895 Iowa State census. Based on her age, ten, in the 1880 census, Maud was born about 1870.
