Jonas Gleason, parentage unknown at this time, was born about 1805 in the State of Vermont. Based on information found in the 1850 United States census return for the Town of LeRay, Jefferson County, New York and information we know about Nathaniel, it appears that this Jonas is the father of Nathaniel Gleason.
In the 1850 census return, Jonas is age forty-five. His place of birth is given as the State of Vermont. He is employed as a shoemaker. His real estate is valued at $600.
Jonas first married Cynthia [family name unknown]. In the 1850 census return, her age is given as forty-two, which would indicate that she was born about 1808. Her place of birth is given as the State of New York. Cynthia died on March 5, 1854. She is buried in the Calcium New Cemetery (also known as Sanford Cemetery) in LeRay, New York.
From the 1850 census return, we learn that Jonas and Cynthia had, at least, three children.
Jonas appears to have married a second time to Lucy Brown. He is found in the 1860 United States census return for the Town of LeRay, New York. At this time Jonas is working as a farmer. His real estate is valued at $1,650 and his personal estate is valued at $450. Beside Lucy, there are two children living with Jonas: Marvin Brown, age fifteen, and Mary Brown, age ten.
In the 1870 United States census return Jonas is once again working as a shoemaker. He is living by himself in the Town of LeRay. His personal estate is valued at $400. It is interesting to note that he is listed as a widower, which would indicate that Lucy Brown had died between 1860 and 1870.
