Walter and Lillie Gleasons' Family

Walter J. Gleason, son of Nathaniel, was born in August of 1852 probably in the Town of Alexandria, New York. Walter pursued a number of careers during in lifetime. In 1870, he was learning painting. In 1895, he was a painter. In 1900, he was a piano finisher. In 1910, he was a clothes merchant and owned his own store.

Walter married Lillian A. [family name unknown]. She was born in March of 1857 in the State of Wisconsin. According to the 1900 United States census return for the City of Minneapolis, Minnesota, the couple had been married for seventeen years. This would indicate that their marriage took place about 1883.

Walter and Lillie had four children. However only three survived to be recorded in the United States census returns. All of the children were born in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

  1. Florence Gleason was born in July of 1888. According to the 1910 United States census return, Florence was a stenographer for a bank in Spokane, Washington.

It appears that she married Edward L. Fitz. The 1920 United States census for Spokane, Washington indicated that Edward was born in 1881 in the State of Iowa. He was a real estate salesman.

Florence and Edward had at least two children:

    1. James C. Fitz was born in 1916.
    2. Marion Fitz was born in 1919.
  2. Arnold Gleason was born in September of 1891. In 1920, he worked as a cashier for a bank in Spokane, Washington. In1930, his occupationis reported to be that of a banker. There is secondary evidence that Arnold died at the age of sixty-two on January 1, 1954 at Spokane, Washington.

Arnold's World War I draft registration card, which was dated June 5, 1911, tells us that he was born on September 23, 1891 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. At that time he was employed as a banker for the Washington Trust Company. He was short of height and of medium built. He had dark blue eyes and dark brown hair. It appeared that he, while attending Washington State College, attained the rank of sergeant as a cadet in auxiliary service that lasted for two years.

Arnold married Edith [family name unknown].

The 1930 United States census return for Spokane, Washington indicated that Arnold and Edith had a daughter.

  3. Grace Gleason was born in December of 1897. According to the 1920 United States census return for the City of Spokane, Washington, Grace was boarding with the family of Thomas Cannon. She was employed as a stenographer for the Pole Company.
