Andrew Hennes and Emma Dorstewitz's Family

Andrew S. Hennes, son of Jacob, was born on December 6, 1884. He was baptized on January 3, 1885 at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in Lemont, Illinois. His godparents were Andrew Willmeng and Marie Heinz. He died from an apparent heart attack while shoveling snow on February 17, 1958 at Benton Harbor, Michigan. He was employed by Remington Rand Company.

Andrew's World War I draft registration card, which was dated September 12, 1917, provided the following information concerning Andrew. It stated that Andrew was born on December 6, 1885, was employed as a paper cutter at Baker Vator, was of medium height and stout built, had grey eyes and dark brown hair. Andrew and his wife, Ella [sic], lived at 650 Territorial Road in Benton Harbor, Michigan.

He married on November 23, 1910 probably at Benton Harbor, Michigan to Emma Dorstewitz, daughter of Gustave Dorstewitz and Josephine Ankli. Emma was born on December 4, 1886 at Milburg, Michigan. She died on July 15, 1962 at Benton Harbor, Michigan. Emma was a member of the Women's Catholic Order of Forresters.

Andrew and Emma had one child

  1. Lawrence Hennes was born on July 16, 1911. The Michigan Death Index and the Social Security death index both list one Lawrence Andrew Hennes who was born on July 16, 1911 and died on July 6, 1995 at St. Joseph, Michigan. Earle W. Mays in his “Genealogical Notes of the Willmeng Family” indicated 1918 as Lawrence's birth year. Lawrence's age in the 1920 and 1930 United States census returns would support 1911 as his year of birth.

On July 14, 1934, he married in South Bend, Indiana to Lillian Jacobson, daughter of Harry Jacobson and Minnie Schmuckler at South Bend, Indiana. Lillian was born on January 20, 1912 in Benton Harbor. She died on January 14, 2004 in St. Joseph, Michigan. Lillian was the Berrien County Juvenile Court Registrar prior to her retirement. She had been a volunteer at Lakeland Hospital in St. Joseph, Michigan.

The August 14, 1934 edition of The News-Palladium carried the following announcement of Lawrence’s and Lillian’s marriages.

Announcement was made today of the marriage of Miss Helen Jacobson, 506 Colfax Avenue, and Lawrence Hennes, also of this city, which occurred in Chicago July 16, at the home of relatives of the bride, Rabbi L. Singer officiating. A civil ceremony had been performed on July 15 in South Bend where the marriage license was obtained. Up to date the couple were successful in keeping their secret. They have returned from Chicago where they attended A Century of Progress, and are in their newly furnished home on Union and May streets. The groom is connected with the Hennes Auto do. Here, and the bride is one of the office staff of the Pier Equipment co. Both are will known.

Lawrence and Lillian had two daughters: Marilyn and Joan.

In the 1910, 1920 and 1930 United States census returns Andrew and Emma are living at 650 Territorial Avenue in Benton Harbor. In 1930, Andrew's estate is valued at $2,200. He is employed as a pipe cutter for a plumbing firm and Emma is employed as an inspector in a knitting mill. According to the 1920 census, Andrew was twenty-five when he married. Emma was twenty-three.

There is an interesting footnote to the information concerning the family of Emma Dorstewitz. Her father, Gustave, served in the Union Army during the Civil War. He enlisted in Company I of the 36th Illinois Infantry on October 6, 1864 for a period of one year. According to the information posted on the state of Illinois' archive page, Gustave was nineteen years of age, lived in Lyons, Illinois, was five feet four and a half inches in height, had light hair, hazel eyes and was light of complexion. According to information found in the 1890 Special Schedule for Surviving Soldiers, Sailors and Marines and Widow, Etc. for Berrien County, Michigan, Gustave enlisted on October 5, 1864 and served until August 20, 1865, a period of ten months and ten days. He appears to have been mustered out because of an injured left ankle, which was sustained at the Battle of Northville Farm. In 1890 Gustave was living in Millburg, Michigan. It appears that both he and his wife, Josephine, received pensions from the United States government for his service with the Union forces.
