George Hennes and Hazel Jewel's Family

George Charles Hennes, son of Jacob, was born on March 25, 1892 at Lemont, Illinois. He was baptized on April 3, 1892. His godparents were Charles Friehauf and Francis Baechle. George died from an apparent heart attack while shoveling snow on January 9, 1957 at Benton Harbor, Michigan. George was employed in the construction business.

George's World War I draft registration card, which was dated June 5, 1917, provided the following information concerning George. His middle name was Charles, he was born on March 25, 1892, was a self-employed car salesman, was of medium height and build and had light blue eyes and black hair. He lived at 992 Kirby W in Detroit, Michigan.

He married on December 7, 1918 probably at Benton Harbor, Michigan to Hazel Jewel, daughter of John Jewel and Betsy Anderson. Hazel was born on July 11, 1897. She died on April 16, 1972 at St. Joseph, Michigan. George was twenty-five at the time of his marriage and Hazel was twenty. Hazel's parent appear to have been John Jewel and Betsy Anderson.

In 1920 and 1930, George and Hazel were living on Jefferson Court in Benton Harbor, Michigan. In 1920 George was employed as a laborer in a cold storage facility. In 1930, he was employed as a platter.

George and Hazel had two children.

  1. George Charles Hennes, Jr. was born July 7, 1919 at Benton Harbor, Michigan. He died on June 8, 1976. The Social Security death index gave June 18, 1976 as George's date of death. George married on February 1, 1946 to Betty Jane Henke, daughter of Edward Henke and Nola Victoria Schmuhl.

    George enlisted in the United States army on February 2, 1942 at Fort Custer, Michigan and attained the rank of Staff Sergeant. His World War II army enlistment records provided the following information concerning George.

    Education: Four years of High School.
    Height: Sixty-nine inches.
    Weight: One Hundred Sixty-six pound.

    It appears from old newspaper articles that Betty was married to John Howard Moore prior to her marriage to George. The marriage took place on march 4, 1944 at Benton Harbor, Michigan. However, John and Betty were divorced in February of 1946 on the grounds of cruelty.

  2. John Hennes was born on October 4, 1924 at Benton Harbor, Michigan. He died on January 24, 1992 at Benton Harbor, Michigan. John married on January 12, 1962 at Baroda, Michigan to Erma Duschek, daughter of Rudolph Duschek and Elizabeth Catherine Abeln. Erma was born on July 14, 1923 probably at Benton Harbor, Michigan.
