The Family of Otis Budd and Grace Gleason

Otis Andrew Budd, son of Joseph, was born on September 22, 1878 at Princeton, Missouri. However, Otis' second marriage registration cites St. Joseph, Missouri as the place of his birth. He died on October 18, 1942 at Cozad, Nebraska. He is buried in the Cozad City Cemetery. Otis was a livery stable operator and bartender during his lifetime. The United States federal census returns report the following occupations for Otis: 1900 – day laborer, 1910 – horse man for livery horses, 1920 – laborer doing day work, and 1930 – sheep farmer.

Otis was described by Rachel Mary Schlientz, nee Budd, as being over six foot in height and having red hair.

Otis’ World War I draft registration card, date September 12, 1917, reported that he was born on September 22, 1876 and that he was employed as a farm laborer by E.F. Good. He was described as tall and of medium build with blue eyes and sandy hair.

An interesting story is related in the Shelton Clipper concerning Otis. It states that Otis

"faced Judge Oliver" and "paid a fine of $10.00 amounting to $15.75 for attempting to assault Steve Horvath Saturday night. It seems that Budd had on his fighting clots and wanted to 'beat up' someone and set out to disturb the peace of the town."

Rachel Mary Schlientz, nee Budd, related that Otis and his brother, Orval, were ambushed one night by a group of five or six men who were going to teach the Budd boys a lesson. Otis and Orvel proved themselves by whipping the group. Otis and Orval were known as "big brick" and "little brick" respectively.

Otis first married on September 22, 1906 at Grand Island, Nebraska to Grace Gleason, nee Curtis, daughter of Samuel Rhodes Curtis and Bersheba Heflin. Witnesses to their marriage were Joseph A.
