Leonard Reist's Families

Leonard Reist, son of Leonard, was born on March 1, 1884 at Benton Harbor, Berrien, Michigan. He died on April 17, 1953 at Benton Harbor. He was buried on April 20, 1953 in Crystal Springs Cemetery at Benton Harbor. From 1904 until 1922, Leonard worked for the Hill Ice Cream Company. In 1922, he established a grocery business on McAllister Avenue in Benton Harbor, which he ran until 1937.

Leonard first married on October 18, 1905 at Benton Harbor to Daisy Nina Jones, daughter of Jacob Geltmache Jones and Alice Angeline Thayer. Daisy was born on February 19, 1896 at Berrien Springs, Berrien, Michigan. She died on July 28, 1941 at Benton Harbor. She is buried in Crystal Springs Cemetery at Benton Harbor. Leonard and Daisy were divorced on June 1, 1937. After her divorce from Leonard, Daisy remarried on June 29, 1941 at Benton Harbor to Milton Stonevic.

Leonard and Daisy had two children.

1. Leo L. Reist was born on April 10, 1906 at Benton Harbor. He died on October 4, 1983 at Benton Harbor.
2. Thelma Reist was born on December 5, 1913 at Benton Harbor. She died on November 28, 1975 at Benton Harbor. She appears to have been employed by the United States Agricultural Department in Ft. Collin, Colorado in the 1940s. From a May 19, 1962 edition of The News-Palladium in its “Do You Remember?” column, there is a reference that leads the author to believe that Thelma had married Jack Dilo and lived in San Francisco, California in the 1950s.

Leonard married a second time on August 15, 1937 at Buchanan, Berrien, Michigan to Ruth Wenger . They were divorced on September 16, 1942 at Benton Harbor. Cruelty was given as the ground for their divorce. [There are some indications that Ruth's maiden name may have been Mead and that she was a nurse by profession. She appears to have married Fred Wenger on April 3, 1920 at Baroda, Berrien, Michigan. Her parents may have been William S. Mead and Iva Kesselman. Ruth divorced Fred on January 25, 1934.]

Leonard married for the third time to Leila Conley, nee Lees on May 6, 1947. Leila, aka Lile, was born on March 7, 1883 at Marion, Indiana. She died on May 19, 1955 at Benton Harbor. She is buried in the Summerville, Michigan cemetery. [Leila's parents may have been Albert ad Lodemia Lees from Marion, Indiana.]
