Leo Reist's Families

Leo L. Reist, son of Leonard, was born on April 10, 1906 at Benton Harbor, Berrien, Michigan. He died on October 4, 1983 at Berrien Springs, Berrien, Michigan. He is buried in North Shore Memorial Garden at Hagar Shore, Berrien, Michigan. Leo was a grocer by profession, having run the store established by his father until his retirement in 1968.

Leo first married on March 8, 1925 to Ruth Viola [family name unknown] . They were divorced at Benton Harbor on April 2, 1930. The divorce was granted on the grounds of cruelty. Ruth was born on March 7, 1898 at Benton Harbor. She died on August 24,1939 at Benton Harbor. She is buried in Crystal Springs Cemetery at Benton Harbor. [Ruth’s maiden name may have been Evans. She appears to have first married on April 11, 1915 to Harold S. Knight. However, in the 1930 United States federal census she is enumerated in the household of Julius and Grace Curtis together with three children: Robert W. Knight, Shirley Knight, and Ann L. Reist.]

Leo and Ruth had one child.

  1. Anne Louise Reist married on May 13, 1943 at Pocatello, Idaho to Norman J. Smith, son of Edward Alvin Smith and Mary Shaefer. Norman served in the United State Air Force during World War II, enlisting on December 12, 1942. He was a meteorologist. Anne and Norman had at least one child, Susan Ann, who was engaged to and probably married Thomas George House.

Leo married a second time on September 1, 1930 to Dorothy Peters, daughter of Arthur Peters, daughter of Arthur F. Peters and Lillie Joan Hoadley.

Leo married a third time on August 15, 1937 to Martha L. Wilderman. Martha was born on November 10, 1906 at Cass Lake, Cass, Minnesota. She died in January 8, 1984 at Berrien Springs. She is buried in North Shore Memorial Garden at Hagar Shore.

Leo and Martha had two children.

  1. Sandra Gay Reist married on November 30,1963 at Benton Harbor Steve Raymond Nemethy, son of Frank Nemethy.
  2. Darlene Reist married in the First Congregational United Church of Christ at Benton Harbor on March 24, 1969 William Franklin Hayes.
