2002 AAU World Championships                Official Meet Results
We got there about 7:30 in the morning, and didn't get out until 10:30 last night. There were two sessions, with two platforms and two flights per platform per session. All told, there were maybe 110 lifters yesterday, with a total of around 250 between yesterday and today.

Overall, it was a very well run meet. Many thanks to Barbara Beasley, who I know put in long hours setting this up. There were a couple problems with misloads (see below). And while I think it's great that the AAU runs youth classes, it does slow things down a lot. Especially in the squat and bench, where they had to constantly be switching racks.

My son also made a lifelong friend in Rickey Dale Crain. I had a handheld TV there, and my son sat with RDC for a good hour or two watching the World Series. He got a free T-shirt, and was kind of impressed about the number
of people asking to get their pictures taken with RDC ;)

Sharon lifted in the second session, which didn't get started until around 4:00. The wait really took it's toll on her. She had also been in the hospital about a month ago, and missed 2 weeks of training. Despite it all, she beat her total from May, and won her class!

She started with a squat opener of 80 (176.5 lbs). She got that easily, and she went with her planned 2nd of 92.5 (203.9). Sharon still has a bad habit of GM'ing it when the weight is heavy, and she did it here. The spotters
grabbed it while still going up. The head judge let her redo her 2nd attempt, but Sharon was spent. She missed that, and her third as well at the same weight. So she ended with 80, 8.5 lbs less than she did in May. In hindsight, we probably should have done 87.5 as a second, but she had done 205 lbs already a couple of times.

Her bench was an adventure. She opened with 45 (99.2 lbs), and it stalled about 5" off her chest. She had me really worried; when she misses a lift, she has a hard time coming back. She took 45 again on her 2nd, and jumped
the press command. Luckily, only the head judge red-lighted her, and she got the lift. She tried 47.5 (104.8) on her third, but missed it.

So going into the DL, she was down 7.5 kg to Sherrie, who had beaten her 540 to 525 in May. Sharon opened with 107.5 (237) and got it easily. Sherrie opened with 112.5, and missed it. Sharon went to 120 (264.6) and got it got
for her 2nd. Sherrie stayed with 112.5, and missed it again. So going into 3rd attempts, Sharon would have been tied even if Sherrie got her 112.5 on her 3rd. We jumped to 127.5 (281.5) for her third. She had already beaten her 255 DL from May, and had done 275 in the garage. Sherrie lifted first, and after not getting 112.5 above her knees twice, shot it up SO fast that she ended up shrugging it up, then down at the finish. She got two red-lights for allowing the bar to drop before the down command, which both Sharon and I thought was very questionable, at best. We both were heartbroken for her.

Sharon pulled her third. It stalled a little before lock out, and the judges red-lighted her for "rocking" the bar. Sharon was pissed, and we were just walking away when the head judge caught her, and told her they had
misloaded the bar on one-side. They let her re-attempt her third, and she got it this time.

So, after 4 squat and 4 DL attempts, Sharon ended with a 252.5 total (557.1). She had beaten her May total by 32 lbs, and walked away with 1st place in the 123 raw Open class. All in all, a tough but gutty performance. I'm extremely proud of her.
