California's Northern Coast is harsh in the winter.  The surf pounds the rugged rock beaches.  Thick forests, fog, rain, and slick mud can make access difficult and dangerous.  The lush green of the woods behind me seemed to have been replaced by a gray thrashing sea and squalling sky.
