Exhaust Systems For the HawkGT

If I were looking into purchasing a new exhaust system for my bike I would definitely want to:

  1. See what the exhaust system looks like.

  2. Hear what it sounds like.

  3. Learn what performance gains can be had.

  4. Understand what modifications might have to be done to get the exhaust system to work at it's full potential.

This page mainly focuses on #2, but I'll try to include as much info as possible about each exhaust system.

For some good info on many exhaust systems for the Hawk go to the exhaust section of Hawkgt.com's FAQ

These are sound bites of my old external disk SuperTrap exhaust.  The first 4 recordings are "on board" and in various locations on the bike.  5 and 6, are ride-bys.

This is John Ruiz's full MVR system.

Ever wondered what your Hawk would sound like running straight pipe?  Well, now you know <grin>

TBR (Two Brothers Racing)

This clip is hyperlinked from TBR's website.

This is Dave Riffles Beasley Hawk with his custom underbelly exhaust system.  He believes the headers are TBRs.  The mufflers are some exhaust shop glass-pack style silencers.

After hearing M4 and TBR systems I wanted something with more rumble than the SuperTrap, so I kept my eye out for a cheap canister that would work with my ST headers/collector.  I had Muzzy in mind, but I'd consider others.  A lister put up some spam on the list which included 3 used cans (Muzzy, D&D, and MVR w/ mid-pipe).  When I found out how much he wanted for them I grabbed them all!  I tested each on the bike with the MVR mid-pipe, and the MVR can, by far, sounded the best.  The only problem was that the MVR mid-pipe was WAY too long , so I did some measurements, hacked it up keeping the ends and the bend in the middle, then took it to a local exhaust shop who welded it up.  It actually turned out pretty well.  This is one of the best sounding Hawk exhausts I've heard, so I'm happy.  :^)

D&D can with old MVR/ST setup:
Hear it:  A few revs, far then close.

2-8-03 I finally got around to installing a new inlet flange on the old D&D can I got some time ago.  I packed it really well, riveted it back together, and voila.  It doesn't snarl as much as the MVR, but I kinda like it.  I think I'll leave it on for a while.  It could sure use a good polishing, though.
Muzzy can with old MVR/ST setup:
Hear it:  At idle, far then close, and a few revs.

2-11-03 This is another one of the exhaust canisters I got.  Also a bit beat up, but sounds great!  Muzzy's are known to be LOUD, and this one did not disappoint.

For my recordings I use a hand held Panasonic cassette tape recorder with a remote mic.  See it.

The foam covering the mic head is to reduce wind noise.  The sound bytes are a compilation of mono .wav files and mp3 files generated with Win built in recorder and Nero's wav editor.  Please excuse the levels and file formats; I'm still trying to find the best audio settings while making the audio clips.

Thanks to Mike Reish for the opening sound clip.  Visit his HawkGT website.
