What's solar ionization, you ask? It's a newer tool that can be used in your hot tub or swimming pool in order to reduce the need for so many chemicals like chlorine or bromine.
The ancient Romans used metal coins to keep their water fresh. Whether by luck or design, they figured out that trace amounts of copper or silver could combat the growth of bacteria and algae. Solar ionizers work on the same principle. They use solar energy to generate a tiny electrical current. This powers an alloyed mineral electrode, which releases mineral ions into the water (not enough to post a threat to swimmers).
Although solar ionization doesn't entirely eliminate the need for a sanitizer like chlorine, it does reduce the amount of chemicals you'll need to use in order to keep your water clean. It won't fight the human contaminants (i.e. sunscreen, perfumes, deodorants, etc.) that make your pool or hot tub water cloudy over time, but it will fight those nasty bacteria.
According to Swimming Pools And Spas you'll reduce the amount of chlorine your pool uses by 80% if you start using a solar ionizer.
