What Is a Swim Spa?

A swim spa uses a propeller system, jets, or a paddle wheel to create a current so you can swim without moving forward in the water. Some people call this "treadmill swimming". This is a space-effective and economical way to swim laps in your own home without building a whole pool.

You can also use a swim spa for aerobic exercise, jogging in place, and hydrotherapy. Because of the swim spa's compact size, they can be installed indoors or in a small yard. The current can be adjusted to accommodate swimmers of various speeds. Like other swimming pools, they can be equipped with stereo systems that are audible underwater. This is a great way to get a cardiovascular workout in your own home and keep things fun.

Swim spa models come in both in-ground and above-ground varieties. Typically, they are about 14-15 feet long, 6-7 feet wide, and 3-6 feet deep. They tend to be made out of fiberglass, acrylic, or stainless steel covered with a vinyl liner. Many units come with seating or a separate section at one end, so your swim spa can be converted into a traditional hot-water spa if you wish.

Similar to the hot tubs dealers sell, swim spas typically come with the shell, pumps, heaters, and filters included in the price of the unit. The cost of heating and monthly maintenance should not be forgotten when you calculate your estimate.
