Adding a Waterfall Terms: Aerobic Bacteria: Bacteria that help remove nitrogen and ammonia from the water of a pond. Usually grow on some type of media, and requires oxygen to grow. Algae: Plant that grows in ponds when too many nutrients are present, altering the Ph and oxygen balance of a pond. May prove fatal to fish if there is too much. Anaerobic Bacteria: Bacteria that grow in water that does not have oxygen in it. Can create Sulpher Dioxide which is toxic to fish. Tends to grow on sediment that sticks in crevices and stagnant areas of ponds. Filter: A way of removing debris and extra nutrients from the water Gold Fish: One common type of hardy fish used in back yard ponds Koi: Large, ornamental oriental fish that are common occupants of back yard ponds. Can grow up to 3’ in length and weigh up to 22 lbs. Mechanical Filters: Filters that require water to be forced through them Media: Any number of substances that will allow bacteria to grow on them for biological filtering PH: Acidity or Alkalinity of the water. Essential for health of fish and plants Pond Liner: Materials that can be purchased to help with the construction of a pond. They are usually water tight. Pump: A device that forces water to move. Vegetable Filters: Plants that help rid the water of excess nutrients Waterfall: A high location where water moves from an upper level to a lower one, often used in returning water that has been filtered to a system or to help oxygenate the water. Water Feature: Any decorative use of water in a garden or home. Can be a birdbath, an old pot filled with water or even an elaborate pond or stream. Horizontal Flow Filter: Filtering system that takes water out of a pond and uses a series of zigzagging water flows to have large particles sink out and then water is filtered back into the system via a bio-filter. Up-Flow Filter: Filtering system that takes water out of a pond, lets particles flow out, and then is filtered back into the system via a biological filter Vortex Filter: Filtering System that relies on a series of containers to filter water for a pond.
