She was very active in the Alpharetta First Baptist Church from her childhood until her death.
She taught Sunday school, worked in all women groups of the church, visitation, Bible School,
and all other phases, but the one thing that people of today will not remember is the Church
Progressive Suppers that were held once a year. Each course of the meal were held at different
houses and we walked from one to the other. The women at that time worked hard to provide
fun things to entertain the church membership. She was also active in school activities at Milton High School. At that time Milton housed first grade to eleventh grade and she was PTA President almost every year one of her children attended. She thoroughly enjoyed volunteering for any worth while activity.
Both Lounette and Talmage graduated from Milton High School as did all their children, and six of their grandchildren. Two of their great grandchildren have also graduated from Milton and two others are now enrolled at Milton. After Lounette's children were in school, she decided to go to work. She worked at Barnette's store for several years and then started her own business. At first she owned a laundrette and then a clothing & fabric store. She also started a boarding house for senior men. She looked after these men for several years. In addition she started a seniors group at the Baptist Church location, from there, she worked with EEO, and North Fulton Seniors. In addition to all of the above, she provided food to many in the area who needed it, and Christmas Presents to Children who had none. Her motto was "do for others." While she was at the North Fulton Seniors group, she and the other members would quilt, and do other crafts. They would sell them to buy medications and other things for those in need. William E, Spence, Sr., wrote in "The Alpharetta Review," "How many of you old timers remember Mr. John and Uncle Bud Shaw? Mr. John was the Father of Mrs. Lounette Burgess, who today is sitting on the front row of Heaven for all the help she performed for the old folks and needy in and around Alpharetta." Lounette died September 1981. All of her five children together cannot keep up with her in doing good deeds for others. Copyright 2007-2009 by Elsie Knight |
