William S. "Billy" Bates

William “Billy” Shirley Bates


Billy was born April 24, 1926, in Milton County to William and Effie Shirley Bates. He has lived here all his life. He talks of walking as a child to small schools. When Billy was a child Milton County did not have school buses or paved roads.

He attended Milton High School. After his graduation he entered the United States Navy and served during World War II.

Upon returning home, he joined his father in the Bates Grocery Store, later known as Bates and Wood Grocery. They were known for having the very freshest meats and produce, some of which was locally produced in season.

Billy married his neighbor, Dorothy Sims, and they had three children, Shirley, Bill and Lynn. He has several grandchildren and great grandchildren.
For many years Billy served with the Alpharetta Volunteer Fire Department, holding many offices. Billy is an experienced wood worker and rock collector. He has made and restored many pieces of furniture.

He is well respected for his service to the community. Billy was involved with restoration of the old Log Cabin, situated next to Milton High School, where he also assisted in construction of the walkway, handicap access ramp, out house and replica of the old court house well shelter. He is quite adept at giving demonstrations on farm implements, chair caning, splitting roof shingles. He loves sharing his knowledge and experiences at the local schools.

Billy has a special interest in Milton County Georgia and has an extensive knowledge of Milton County family genealogy and histories. He has accumulated a collection of over 12,000 names of family members from the county. Billy has a vast knowledge of the cemeteries in Milton County and works with Fulton County personnel in locating and preserving neglected and abandoned cemeteries. Genealogy and history researchers of Milton County are always referred to Billy.

Because of his knowledge and interest of Milton County he was elected Historian for Milton County History and Genealogy Group. Except for his knowledge and dedication, much of the History of Milton County would not be preserved.
