Confederate Pension Application
Jacob Alexander Stroup

Cathleen Pilalas is researching Jacob A. and Sarah E. Stroup, which Esta Walker in the article stated, were her grandparents. Jacob Stroup [b.1846, d.1933] and his spouse Sarah E. Whelchel [b. 1846, d.1921] were married 1867 in Milton Co, GA, and also, are enumerated in the 1900, 1910, 1920 census of Milton county. A short time ago, while researching the siblings of my great grandmother Georgia Amy Stroup [Davis] we acquired the Confederate Pension Application of her brother Jacob Stroup that was filed May 22, 1926 in Milton County. During the War Between the States her brother Jacob was a member of the Cherokee Legion he served in Company C for six months being about seventeen years old at the time of his enlistment, Jacob, was the youngest of her three brothers that had enlisted in the CSA army.

Jacob Alexander Stroup was born 21 April 1846, near the area known as Stampcreek in the 12th Division of Cass County, Georgia, near the location of the Etowah Manufacturing Company presently known as Cooper's Furnace in Etowah, Bartow County, Georgia. He was a son of Benjamin Stroup and Elizabeth Sarah Roach. Benjamin was born in Lincoln County, North Carolina in 1802; he was the son of Jacob Stroup and Betsy Dellinger. Elizabeth Sarah Roach Stroup was born in Habersham County, Georgia in 1824; she was a daughter of James S. Roach and Elizabeth M. Ragsdale.

Prior to the war, Jacob A. Stroup was residing with his parents near Waleska, Harbin's District, Cherokee county, Georgia, here on Ragsdale and Shoal Creek his parents owned a small farm and operated a gristmill. On July 22, 1863, Jacob Stroup at the age of seventeen enlisted in the Cherokee Home Guards Company C, Cherokee Legion at Canton, Georgia. After the death of his father in 1864 or 1865, and also, after the war between the states, Jacob, along with his mother and younger sibling moved to Marietta, Gritter's District, Cobb County.

In 1867, Jacob A. Stroup and Sarah E. Whelchel married in in Milton County, Georgia. Afterward they established their home in the Roswell District, Cobb County, prior to the 1900 census they were residing in Crossville, Milton County, where Jacob and several of his sons were actively engaged in farming. Jacob and Sarah were parents of a large family consisting of approximately twelve children. Jacob Alexander Stroup died January 17, 1933 and Sarah E. Whelchel Stroup died February 12, 1921, both are interred at Harmony Grove Methodist Cemetery, Cobb County, Georgia. Several members of their family are also interred at Roswell Methodist Cemetery in plot #378 next to Hiram Welchel born June 11, 1802, died September 4, 1869 which could/might be her father. Presently this theory is only my supposition that hasn't thus far been verified.

Officers of the Cherokee Legion as of July 22, 1863 were: James E. Rusk, Colonel: Benjamin Hill. Lt. Colonel: E.G. Gramling, Major: Isaac McConnell, AQM

Note: J.J. Flanigan: witness on the pension application is John J. Flanigan brother-in-law of J.A. Stroup husband of his sister Sarah Jane Stroup.
