John A & Annie Burton Oliver
John Abner Oliver was born in 1858 in Milton County. His parents were William M. and Margaret (Peggy) Huddleston Oliver. He had a sister, Agnes Jeanie who married William S. Tribble.

Annie Gertrude Burton was born in 1866 in Milton County. Her parents were William Calvin and Martha Clark Burton. Annie had one brother and two sisters, Mary Ella (Aunt Sissy), who never married, John who married Ella Dillard and Lula who married Giles Perry Moore.

John and Annie married in the 1880's.



John and Annie had nine children, two of whom died in infancy. The oldest was Janettie who married John Robert Shaw; William C. who married Cora Shirley; Alexander Earl who married Minnie Shirley; Carl G. who married Alice Martin, Bertie Jean who never married, Ina who married John Walker and Jewel who married Howard Bagwell.






John and Annie lived a a two story Victorian House which stood where the BP Station is located. John owned a store on the corner of Highway 9 and Milton Avenue. John's Mother, Margaret (Peggy)Oliver Mayfield and Annie's Sister Mary Ella lived with them and are in the picture of the familystanding in front of their house.

John owned the building where Nantucket Sandwich Shop is now located. He also owned the Oliver Building and operated a general merchandise store in that building. He also owned land south of Publix.

John Oliver died of a heart attack on Nov. 1920 in his store on Main Street. In his obituary it was said that "A funeral as largely attended as any ever held in Alpharetta, the Baptist Church and church yard being overflowed. John Oliver was the possessor of his own soul. Few men that we have known had greater control of temper and tongue. With silence or a soft answer he frequently turned away wrath. He was always considerate of the feelings of others and modest in his own claims. But the place where he shone to greatest advantage was in the home. He literally worshiped his family finding nearly all his pleasures in the company of wife and children and grandchildren. For their comfort and pleasure he labored in season and out."


Annie died May 13, 1945. She is remembered as a loving and caring person, much loved by those who knew her.


John and Annie have four surviving grandchildren, none of whom lives in the Alpharetta area. However, there are numerous great grandchildren, great great grandchildren and great great great grandchildren in Alpharetta.
