After the Revolutionary War, John married Agnes Henry, a sister of Patrick Henry. They had nine chldren: Simon, Ruben, Nancy, Benson, Clara, Mary, Elizabeth, William Pennington and Ann. Their descendants--Ruckers, Hembrees, Turners and others--had a profound influence on the this area.
The Sons of the American Revolution, Piedmont Chapter, originally marked the grave on August 10, 1996. The original marker was stolen. On April 12, 2003, the grave marker was rededicated.
At the rededication ceremony, Aubrey Morris was Master of Ceremonies and the proclamation given by Georgia Senator Chuck Martin in the absence of the Mayor. Hon. Bob Buck, Charles Moran, Rebecca Lee and Brittany Hall, descendants of Patriot Maxwell, Bob Miller, Jim Conerly, and GASSAR Color Guard, also took part in the rededication ceremony.
