| Do not baste or pin the layers of your quilt. | |
| The backing and batting should both be a minimum of 4" longer and wider than the quilt top. Ex. if your quilt top is 60" x 80", the backing and batting should be 64" x 84". | |
| Check if the quilt top is square. If there is more than 1 1/2" difference between the center and edge measurements, there is a chance that there will be a pleat in your quilt after quilting. | |
| Please remove selvedges at seams when piecing quilt backings, as the seam will be too tight for quality quilting. Selvedges at the outer edges of backings are fine, as long as you have the extra 4" as mentioned above. | |
| Check that the backing is square, especially if pieced. | |
| Please press your quilt top and back carefully, with the seams pressed open or to one side. | |
| Trim any loose threads from the quilt, top and back, especially if they are dark and could show through lighter fabrics. | |
| Please topstitch 1/8" from the edge of the top and backing (if pieced). Your quilt will be under tension while on the quilting machine, and weak seams could pop open. If your outer border is solid, back-tacking the seams is sufficient. | |
| If there is a specific top or "head" to your quilt top or backing, please mark accordingly. | |
| Any fusible appliqués should be securely topstitched. |
