Howell's Battery History

The battery was mustered into Confederate service as Martin's Battery in May, 1862. One hundred and twenty -five officers and enlisted men were accepted into service. The battery served in Georgia until May of '63 at which time it was ordered to Mississippi. In late summer of '63 it joined the Army Of Tennessee.  

Originally the company was armed with two six-pounders and two 12lb Napoleons. The two six-pounders were captured at Missionary Ridge, Tenn. On November 25 1863. Two union 12lb napoleons were captured at Chickamauga and given to the unit in mid-December, 1863. Battles fought during the defense if Atlanta include Tunnel Hill, Rocky Face, Buzzard's Roost, Resaca, Cassville, Pumpkin Vine Creek, Dallas, New Hope Church, Pickett's Mill, Alltoona Hills, Pine Mt, Lost Mt, Mud Creek, Noyes Creek, Kolbs Farm, Kennesaw Mt, Nickajack Creek, Chattahoochee River, Peach Tree Creek, Atlanta, Jonesboro, Lovejoy Station. Other battles include Jackson Ms, Chickamauga and Chattanooga.
