This guide is intended for use with a
Linksys EtherFast Cable/DSL Router model BEFSR41. Although the Linksys BEFSR41 router shares the same firmware with
Linksys BEFSR11/BEFSRU31, a
majority portion of this guide can also be applied to the Linksys BEFSR11/BEFSRU31 routers as well.
Firmware used at the time of this guide written is: 1.44.2z
(inclusion of ZoneAlarm and PC-cillin vs. 1.44.2 without them).
Firmware is dated: December 13, 2002. You can download up-to-date firmwares
here. To know how to update your Linksys router's
firmware, go to Updating Firmware section.
This guide has also been ported over to Microsoft Word XP (2002), a printer friendly word document. You can download the guide
here.
The guide assumes the following:
- You have cable Internet access and you have the Linksys router (or soon to have).
- Computers have network interface cards (NIC) installed already.
- Comcast High-Speed Internet as ISP. Note: Doesn't mean this guide won't work for your different ISP.
- A Linksys EtherFast Cable/DSL Router model BEFSR41. Note: Having a BEFSR11/BEFSRU31 only differs with the physical hardware
from the BEFSR41 router.
The guide focuses mainly on the following:
- Start from the beginning when you just bought your Linksys router.
- Setting up router to get IP dynamically from ISP (Comcast High-Speed Internet issues dynamic IP addresses).
- Configuring Win9X/Me/2K/XP computers.
- 4 computers to be connected.
- Mainly using static IP addressing to ease forwarding ports in the future.
- 3 static IP addressing (desktop computers) & 1 dynamic IP addressing (laptop computer).
- Enable filesharing between computers.
- Support for mIRC Ident and DCC send.
The guide doesn't cover the following:
- What isn't listed above is not covered in this guide.
