MINISTRY REPORTS

Environment:  The cornucopia is coming and the Advent Wreath will be up the Friday after Thanksgiving.

EMs:  Sign ups for Thanksgiving mass are out and Christmas will be made soon.  There will be a meeting soon to discuss some issues primarily the need for more help to bring communion to the homebound.

Greeters:  All set for Thanksgiving and penance services.

Lectors:  Thanksgiving, penance services and Christmas all set.  No new training till next year.

Music:  Will discuss details in Study Time.  The Wassail will be December 4 at 4pm.  Wassail and hors d’oeurvres will be served.

Ushers:  Still trying to coordinate a meeting with the ushers, probably will need to try to do something after each mass.  One big issue is seating people during the readings and opening the doors to the hall.  Question came up about not announcing at funerals that only Catholics are to partake of communion.  The problem is that there may also be some Catholics who should not be going to communion.

OLD BUSINESS

Four Part Lenten Series – Veronica Kelley and Carla Caldwell will present a series on the different dimensions of the Eucharist.  They will be on Mondays in March at 7pm.  We will also be having soup and bread on Fridays with the Stations of the Cross.

NEW BUSINESS

Christmas Nail Work Party – Friday Dec 2 at 4:30pm we will put together the nails to give out at the Christmas penance services.

Our Lady of Guadalupe – We will host a service at midnight on Dec 12.  There will be a dinner preceding the mass at 9pm, a rosary at 10:30pm, and a procession starting between 11 and 11:30pm.  About 500 attended at St. Olaf’s last year so we expect a large crowd.  We will need ushers, greeters and EMs.

Simbang Gabi – Dec 19 at 7pm at Holy Trinity and Dec 16 at 5pm at Star of the Sea

Solemnity of Mary – Since this falls on a Sunday, masses will follow the regular weekend schedule.

H.O.S.T. – Social Justice commission is looking for each council/commission to help provide a meal for the homeless men in January.  This year the men will be staying at First Christian all winter and the various churches will provide the evening meal.  We do not need to provide breakfast and lunch this year; however, the dinner meal must be prepared in a certified kitchen per health department regulations. This means no home cooked meals, so people will have to bring “store bought” or restaurant meals or cook the meal in the kitchen at First Christian.  Meals need to be ready to eat by 7pm each evening.

Discernment – Each council and commission needs to revise their by-laws.  We also need to start thinking about ways to generate names of prospective new members.

BREAK – Nibbles provided by Don (and Diane) Yaw, thanks for the scones, cookies and fruit.

STUDY TIME

Advent/Christmas Planning

-          prelude music

-          opening song “People Look East”

-          sprinkling rite – song “Rain Down:

-          during distribution of communion to the homebound “Waiting in Silence”

-          Advent Wreath – prayer of blessing at conclusion of the prayers of the faithful

-          drape doorways in royal blue and white with evergreen swags in the hall

-          Dec 8 drape around statue of Mary

-          blessing for travelers

-          for Christmas, wreaths on the walls on either side of the altar

-          Miller-Woodlawn will provide calendars and 12” pots of poinsettias, Fr Jack will also get additional poinsettias from Molbak’s

-          considerable discussion time regarding the entrance procession:  some commission members and parishioners have expressed a desire to “simplify” the procession; others believe that because this is Christmas the procession should have more fanfare.  Concensus agreed that we would not have all the angels this year but perhaps married couples to represent Mary and Joseph bringing in the Christ Child.  Possibly have kids and the children’s mass at 5pm.  They would be accompanied by a light bearer and incense bearer.

-          no martyrology at any masses

-          possibly a brass fanfare except at the 5pm mass

-          no incense at the 5pm and 10am masses
