Hudson Lake Conservation Association
May– 2012 Progress Report
Dear Hudson Lake
Community,
First of all, I do
waiver our annual membership fee of $25 for our fiscal year of June 1,
2012 to May 31, 2013. Our treasury now stands at $5923.28.
Remembering the
terms IDNR (Indiana Dept. of Natural Resources) and LARE
(Lake And River Enhancement program), here are a few things to share
with you regarding HLCA’s managing the lake.
- In December of
2011, we did apply for a 2012 IDNR-LARE grant to control the exotic
/ invasive Eurasian Water Mil-foil (EWM) in our lake.
- In April,
2012, we did obtain the grant for our requested $8500 to develop our
4th year of our Aquatic Vegetation Management Plan (AVMP)
and to herbicide all the EWM beds that are located in the lake.
- We then
requested bids from six LARE approved contractors. We then
selected 1 contractor to survey and develop the AVMP, plus prepare a
special map locating the EWM beds along with the acreage of each
bed. We also selected another contractor to thoroughly herbicide
each of the EWM beds.
- The survey
will take place during the last week of May and the herbicidal
treatment will be completed before June 8th , 2012.
- After these 2
projects are successfully accomplished, each contractor will invoice
our association for their costs. The LARE grant will pay for 80 %
of the costs, and we will cover the remaining 20%.
Performing
the above steps 1 thru 5 each year will control the infestation of EWM
in our lake. Because the EWM populates so rapidly, these steps need
to be done each year. This is a recent requirement that did not exist
prior to 2005. The EWM was brought in from other lakes by boats and
trailers. It cannot be ignored.
Whether we get
LARE grants or not, we still do need to manage the bad aquatic plants in
our lake. If we do not monitor and control them every year, bad exotic
plants will take over the lake and choke out the preferred plants that
clean and oxygenate the lake. The result of losing the good plants
will be the loss of oxygen, and finally the loss of fish.
We now have one of
the most beautiful lakes in the state of Indiana. If we do not
maintain vigilance over our lake, it can lose this beauty sooner than
you think.
Important:
Again, I will be leaving the presidency in the near future. Someone
does need to step up to take over my position. I will offer my support
to the extent requested by the new president.

President

HLCA -
MEMBERSHIP
Effective June 1, 2012 -
May 31, 2013
HLCA will again waive the annual membership fee for the year of 2012, i.e. June
1, 2012 – May 31, 2013. We are no longer saving our
treasury funds to install a pumping system to maintain the
legal level of Hudson Lake. However, in the future, if our
lake falls several feet below its legal level again,
installing a pump will be re-evaluated.
If you would like to become a member of HLCA, kindly
