Babkirk, Justice of the Peace, Greenland, N.H..6 Dr. Wendell Phillips Clare married before 1935, Evelyn R (--?--).8 Dr. Wendell Phillips Clare married before 1957, Geraldine F Ward.1,9 Dr. Wendell Phillips Clare died at New Castle, Rockingham County, New Hampshire, on 24 May 1974 at a nursing home at age 83.1,7 He was buried at Harmony Grove Cemetery, Portsmouth, Rockingham County, New Hampshire.1

Dr. Wendell Phillips Clare was a doctor operating from his home on 8 April 1930.4 He and Ruth Huntress Lord resided at 402 State Street, Portsmouth, Rockingham County, New Hampshire, between 8 April 1930 and 1933.4 Dr. Wendell Phillips Clare and Evelyn R (--?--) resided at 10 Merrimac St, Portsmouth, Rockingham County, New Hampshire, between 1935 and 1943.8 Dr. Wendell Phillips Clare and Geraldine F Ward resided at 402 State Street, Portsmouth, Rockingham County, New Hampshire, between 1957 and 1961.12,9 New Castle - A pioneer in forensic medicine in New Hampshire and county medical referee for many years. Dr. Wendell Phillips Clare, 83, of 22 Cranfield St., died Friday at a nursing home.

Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon a Buckminster Chapel with the Rev. W. Charles Hodgins, rector of St. John's Episcopal Church, officiating.

Dr. Clare was Rockingham County medical referee for 20 years, retiring in 1969 from that position. He founded the N.H. Medical-Legal Society in 1949.

Born in Quincy, Mass., Dec. 27, 1890, he was the son of James Phillip and Sarah Belle (Richards) Clare.

He served in the Army during World War 1, coming to Portsmouth in 1922 as U.S. Public Health Service doctor and later became the Coast Guard staff doctor, serving for 23 years.

He was a member of the Rockingham County Law Enforcement Organization and a Fellow of the American Academy of Forensic Medicine.

A graduate of Tufts University School of Medicine, he was a member of the Rockingham County Medical Society, the N.H. Medical Society and a 50-years member of the Massachusetts, Medical Society.

He belonged to the Frank E. Booma American Legion Post of Portsmouth for 39 years and the Portsmouth Historical Society. He was a 50-year Mason, and a member of St. Jon's Lodge, F & AM, Scottish Rite Bodies of Portsmouth and Dove, and the New Hampshire Consistory, 32nd Degree, of Nashua.

Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Geraldine (Ward) Clare.

Burial was in Harmony Grove Cemetery with committal by the Rev. Mr. Hodgins.

The flag draping the casket was presented to the widow by the Rev. Mr. Hodgins.

Pallbearers were Nelson K. Ward, Fred G. Ward Jr., David D. Knight, T. Russell Brightman and Roger W. Guilbeault.1

     Wendell Phillips Clare Jr. was born at Greenland, Rockingham County, New Hampshire, on 26 January 1921.3,1,2 He was the son of Dr. Wendell Phillips Clare and Ruth Huntress Lord.1,3 Wendell Phillips Clare Jr. and Ruth Huntress Lord were divorced before 7 August 1937.4 Wendell Phillips Clare Jr. married at Little Harbor chapel, Portsmouth, Rockingham County, New Hampshire, circa 21 June 1943, Marion E Hodgdon, daughter of Chauncey Cheever Hodgdon and Mildred Walker, ceremony performed by Rev. Harold W. Curtis, pastor of the Middle Street Baptist church.5,6 Wendell Phillips Clare Jr. died at Exeter, Rockingham County, New Hampshire, on 4 March 2000 after a brief illness at age 79.3,2
      He was a 1939 graduate of Portsmouth High School and was a cum laude graduate of the University of New Hampshire, where he was a member of the Pi Gamma Mu and Phi Kappa Phi honor societies.
He was a Coast Guard veteran of World War II, serving for five years.
He was a member of the board of directors, vice president of finance, secretary and treasurer of Nichols, Inc., of Exeter, Nichols Southeast Inc., and Granja Nichols de Cuba, S.A., and was a trustee of the Nichols Foundation.
He was a member of North Congregational Church of Portsmouth, where he served as chairman of the Board of Wardens, the Building Committee, and the Building Fund, and was a member of the board of trustees.
He was a member of St. Andrew's Masonic Lodge, Portsmouth; a member of the Portsmouth Rotary Club; a director of the Portsmouth Rehabilitation Center; and a director of the Smaller Business Association of New England. He served on the national board of field advisers for the Small Business Administration in Washington, D.C.
He was a former member of Central Congregational Church in Providence, R.I., where he served as a member of the Board of Deacons and was chairman of the Prudential Committee and Buildings and Grounds Committee. While residing in Rhode Island, he served as financial vice president and as a member of the board of directors of an oil consortium based in Providence, retiring in 1986. He was also a governor of Rhode Island Hospital.3 He graduated from Portsmouth High School at Portsmouth, Rockingham County, New Hampshire, in 1939.3 He and Marion E Hodgdon resided at Pawtucket, Providence County, Rhode Island, on 23 August 1969.7
