Norman Edwin Garland was born at Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts, on 19 May 1924.2,1,3,4 He was the son of Bertram Franklin Garland and Bernice E Wood.1,2,4 Norman Edwin Garland married at Plainfield, Washington County, Vermont, on 14 September 1946, at age 22, Eleanor May Barrett, age 26, daughter of Benjamin W Barrett and Mabel H Goodale, ceremony performed by Frank R. Bradley, Methodist.2,4,5 Norman Edwin Garland died at Berlin Health and Rehabilitation Center, 98 Hospitality Dr, Barre, Washington County, Vermont, on 19 August 2008 at age 84.2

He grew up in Bedford, Mass., with his two brothers and graduated from Lexington (Mass.) High School where he was a member of the track and field team and Master of the Order of DeMolay. After high school, Norman worked in the Garland family insurance business for a short while. During the war years, he moved to Vermont where he worked as a farmer at the Coburn Farm near Plainfield. Norman was active in the local Ivy Grange and served as Master of the Grange for two years.
In 1946, he married Eleanor Barrett of Plainfield. Together they owned and operated a dairy farm in Hardwick, where they raised four children. Norman sold Christmas trees, plowed snow and tilled gardens in and around Barre and Montpelier. Subsequently, Norman worked for many years at the Allen Lumber Company in Montpelier and intermittently for Raymond Copping. After Norman retired, he resided for a time in Johnson where he was active in the United Church of Johnson. Eventually Norman moved to Barre, declaring he was "terrific" to all who asked. He was seen most Christmases ringing bells for the Salvation Army.
Norman was a man of charity and generosity beyond his means, a man of big dreams, high hopes, strong opinions and religious convictions. Norman loved children and animals and strived to treat others with friendship and kindness. He championed the underdog and sought meaning and purpose in his living.2
Norman Edwin Garland was an insurance broker on 14 September 1946.4 He resided at Vermont on 31 January 2008.6
