      According to Eleanor Murray Huntress her great uncle Arthur Gay often told the story of how he saved Mark Twain's life. It appears that Mark Twain was unfamiliar with a particular bend of the Mississippi and had gotten stuck in the mud. Arthur, seeing his danger of drowning, put personal safety aside and immediately went out and extricated him, saving his life, for which he showed extreme gratitude. By the way, Samuel Clemens, the author, was probably in Elmira, New York, when this happened. You see, Mark Twain was the name of Arthur's dog!

He was one of the selectmen, 1654. He died March 4, 1688. Joanna, his wife, died Aug. 14, 1691. She is said in family tradition to have been widow Baldwicke before her marriage to John Gay. His will in the Suffolk records, dated Dec. 18, 1686, was proved Dec. 17, 1686, his wife Joanna and son John being the executors.
