Yesterday afternoon, the funeral of a well-known letter carrier of this city, Mr. Charles Huntress, who died on Friday last, took place, and was attended by all the carriers of the city, headed by the superintendent, Mr. J.W. Bell. The interment took place at the Congressional Cemetery.

     Charles Edwin Huntress was born at Worcester, Worcester County, Massachusetts, on 12 March 1841.1,2,3 He was the son of John S. Huntress and Anna Sherburn Dennett. Charles Edwin Huntress died at Alexandria, Alexandria County, Virginia, on 20 September 1862 of disease at age 21.2,3 He was buried at Gravelly Ridge Cemetery (Frank M. Dennett Farm), Portsmouth, Rockingham County, New Hampshire.4
     Charles was a machinist at Biddeford, York County, Maine. He was living, 1 June 1850, in the family of Mark5 Dennett at Portsmouth, Rockingham County, New Hampshire, who married as his second wife Susanna Thompson(5) Huntress. She was thus the aunt by nature and step-grandmother by marriage of the children of John S. Huntress. In her letter of 1859 to Charles Edwin she signs herself: "your affectionate grandmother and aunt Susan T. Dennett".. He was a soldier in the Civil War from Portsmouth (Co. K, 2nd N.H. Vol. Inf.).2 He, of Portsmouth, age 20, enlisted in the Civil War on 22 April 1861.3,2 He, reenlisted in the Civil War on 21 May 1861.3 He mustered into Company K, 2nd N.H. Vol. Inf. as a Private on 8 June 1861.3

     Charles Edwin Huntress was born at Eliot, York County, Maine, on 27 March 1853.4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12 He was the son of William Walker Huntress and Izette F. Spinney.3 Charles Edwin Huntress married at Portsmouth, Rockingham County, New Hampshire, on 21 September 1875, at age 22, Mary Eva Dixon, age 18, daughter of Daniel S. Dixon and Lydia N Tetherly, ceremony performed by W. H. Alden, of Portsmouth, clergyman.1,9 Charles Edwin Huntress died at his home at South Eliot, York County, Maine, on 8 December 1916 in the afternoon at 1 o'clock after a lingering illness at age 63.3,13,5 He was buried at Mount Pleasant and Greenwood Cemeteries, Bolt Hill Road, Eliot, York County, Maine, on 11 December 1916 under the direction of Undertaker A. T. Parker (Photo by Chuck Huntress).13
     He was a a brick mason by trade and for a long period of years employed by Eldredge Brewing Company until sickness compelled him to give up work.3 He resided at Eliot, York County, Maine, on 22 June 1880.12 He was listed as the head of a family on the 1880 Census at Eliot, York County, Maine.

Mrs. Charles Huntress was called to Portland Friday by the sickness of her grandchild, who was ill with spinal meningitis, which resulted fatally Saturday. It was the youngest child of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Huntress, and the funeral services were held today.15 He and Mary Eva Dixon resided at Pleasant Street, Eliot, York County, Maine, on 30 November 1912.16
