Alleged Burglars Shot In Fight With Officer
About 3:30 last Saturday morning, while patrolman Henry E. Hansen was cruising the streets in the police car, he noticed a sedan parked near the Cocasset Hall on Cocasset Street. On investigation he found the back of the car filled with cans of oil, and automobile accessories, and also noticed a bank book in the name of Howard W. Swift, an employee of the Foxboro Mansfield Bus Co. Realizing that a robbery had been committed, and possibly that another was in progress, he went looking for the operator of the car. Near a fence in back of the building his flashlight pointed out a man crouching. Calling on him to surrender, Officer Hansen advanced. The man leaped toward him, and struck him on the side of the head with a blackjack. At the same time the man cried presumably to one or more confederates, "Give him the gun". Officer Hansen, as the man reached to strike him again, and hearing the movements of another man close to him, fired at his adversary, striking him in the shoulder and felling him. As he fired, he was struck from the other side with a blackjack. The officer turned and fired, hitting his assailant above the heart and fatally wounding him. Officer Hansen then took note that there were no others about, and fired into the air four times to bring help. Chief Joseph P. Dean, who lives across the street from the spot, heard the shots, hurriedly dressed and responded, as did Kenneth Dupee, a highway worker preparing to tackle his before dawn work of cleaning the streets in the center. The two men were placed in the police car and rushed to the Foxboro State Hospital. One man died shortly after his arrival, while the other was treated for gunshot wounds to the shoulder. The dead man was identified as Elbert O. Huntress, 34, of Stoughton, a former resident here. The wounded man was identified as John Corkum, 29, also of Stoughton, and a former resident here, a brother in law of the dead man.
Huntress is survived by a widow and three children, aged 10, 9 and 6 years. Corkum is unmarried. The automobile used by the men was owned by a Taunton man, and had been parked in the railroad yard at Stoughton due to a breakdown. It is presumed that the men repaired the car, and then took it for use on this trip. Investigation at the Foxboro-Mansfield Bus Co. garage on Central Street disclosed that a window had been jimmied, and that the loot in the car had been from that garage. Search of the Huntress home, Stoughton, revealed a gun and a box of cigars, presumed to have been loot from another robbery. Huntress had no previous police record except an arrest for drunkenness. His companion, Corkum, has a long record and has been out of a New Hampshire jail but a few months after being convicted of stealing automobile accessories. Corkum was unable to appear in court Monday, but was charged at that time with assault and intent to kill, unlawful appropriation of automobile, breaking and entering in the nighttime, and larceny. He was able to go to court Wednesday and pled guilty on all counts except assault. He was held in a total bail of $8,300, and failing to produce bail, was committed to Dedham Jail to await trial. Chief Joseph P. Dean absolved Officer Hansen of any blame in the affair, and the District Attorney's office also cleared him of any blame in the shooting. State Detective Michael Flemming made a complete investigation of the affair, with the possibility of clearing up any other similar breaks in Stoughton and other towns.
