Samuel D. Huntress was born at Newington, Rockingham County, New Hampshire, on 17 March 1772.1 He married, first, at Fryeburg, Oxford County, Maine, on 1 November 1806, at age 34, Hannah Kate.2,3 Samuel D. Huntress married, second, at Fryeburg, Oxford County, Maine, by Henry Hawkins on 3 January 1832, at age 59, Alice Wiley, age 53, of Fryeburg, daughter of Benjamin Wiley and Alice Kilgore, and widow of Micah Abbott of Fryeburg Addition, who had died 2 July 1825.4,5 Samuel D. Huntress died "aet. 78 yrs 4 mos" at Stow, Oxford County, Maine, on 17 July 1850 at age 78.1,6 He was buried 7 at Hillcrest Cemetery, Stow, Oxford County, Maine.8,6
He resided at 1/2 mile below Stow Corner, Stow, Oxford County, Maine.9 He was a soldier in the War of 1812, as a private in Capt. Hezekiah Bickford's Company, Lieut. Col. William Ryerson's Regiment, raised at Porter, service at Portland. from Porter from 25 September 1814 to 7 November 1814.10 Samuel D. Huntress was listed as the head of a family on the 1820 Census at Fryeburg Addition, Oxford County, Maine. In his family were 1 male between 10 and 16 years of age (Samuel), one age 45 and over (Samuel), and 2 females between 26 and 45 (Hannah and unk).11 Samuel D. "Humtress" was listed as the head of a family on the 1830 Census at Fryeburg, Oxford County, Maine. In his family were 1 male age 15 to 20; 1 female age 40 to 50; and 1 male age 50 to 60. The male (age 15 to 20) in the household could possibly have been someone helping Samuel on the farm after the death of his son in 1828..12,13 Samuel D. Huntress was listed as the head of a family on the 1840 Census at Stow, Oxford County, Maine. In his family were 1 female age 5 to 10; 1 female age 40 to 50; and 1 male age 50 to 60. The female (age 5 to 10) in the household is a puzzle, since Samuel's second wife, Alice, had no children of that age from her first marriage. It's possible that this child may be one of Alice's grandchilren; probably one of Eleanor (Abbott) Cook's children. Eleanor's husband (Thomas Cook) apparently died about 1839-40. Alice's age was 62 and should have been in the 60 to 70 category.14,13
