Walter Carlton Huntress was born at Shapleigh, York County, Maine, on 7 January 1930.3,4,5 He was the son of Carl Otis Huntress and Carlotta Maude Dunn.2 Walter Carlton Huntress died of complications due to Althziemer's Disease at Greenwood Center, Sanford, York County, Maine, on 4 May 2006 at age 76.6,5,7 He was buried at Huntress/Winn Cemetery, 351 Back Road, Shapleigh, York County, Maine.

Walter Huntress served in the Sanford Fire Department for 37 years. It was a fitting career for a man who valued hard work and had a need to help others.
Mr. Huntress, of Shapleigh, started out as a volunteer in 1955 and rose through the ranks. He became division chief in 1977 and also served as acting chief. He died Thursday at the age of 76 at the Greenwood Center.
In the Huntress household, it wasn't unusual for the whole family to be awakened by "the tapper" - the bell with a hammer that would sound when there was a fire in town. The fire station whistle was loud and around the corner, but the tapper was kept in the bedroom to ensure he would never miss a fire.
"If there was a fire, he was gone," said Karen Lee Dumas of Springvale, one of his four daughters.
The number of whistle blows corresponded to the codes assigned to each of the streets. Dumas remembers running over to the chart to figure out where her father was headed.
If it was a big fire, the household would be bustling with activity as his wife, Pauline Huntress, and others from the women's auxiliary made sandwiches for the firefighters and those displaced by the blaze.
To his girls, Mr. Huntress was big and strong and his work filled with adventure, Dumas said.
"We couldn't wait for him to get home to tell us what happened," she said.
Dumas remembers seeing her father in action once - though it was from a distance. The family was on its way to visit a relative when Mr. Huntress stopped the car at a mill fire, saying, "I'm just going to see what's going on. I'll be right back."
They next saw him atop the aerial truck.
The firefighters were like family. The girls would stop by the station and play Ping-Pong downstairs and the firefighters were always coming by their house.
It wasn't just Mr. Huntress' firefighting life that made his family think of him as their rock, Dumas said. He was a devoted family man, who especially delighted in his eight grandchildren.
"He loved to watch them," Dumas said. "Just look at them, their expressions, when they were sleeping."
Mr. Huntress loved being outside, whether he was playing sports with the grandchildren, taking a walk or tending his vegetable garden.
Toward the end of his firefighting career, Mr. Huntress raised beef cattle. The endeavor, complete with the difficult work of haying, was for pleasure, rather than for business, Dumas said.
"He loved it," Dumas said. "I think he just liked hard work. That's just the way he was."6 He had a mailing address at RR 1 1585, Springvale, York County, Maine.8 He graduated from Sanford High School at Sanford, York County, Maine, in 1948.2 Walter Carlton Huntress was Mr. Huntress served on the Sanford Fire Department for 37 years. He started out as a call fireman in 1955. He worked his way up as a call firefighter and eventually became first assistant chief in the call company. In 1967 he joined the full time department, he worked his way through the ranks of the department and became division chief in 1977. He served for a time as the acting chief. Walter retired on March 12, 1993.

Walter was a very hard worker and usually found a way to keep himself busy. He enjoyed vegetable gardening and raising beef cattle. Mr. Huntress also did work as a carpenter; he built many houses over the years. In his younger years he raced cars at a track in South Sanford. Walter was a very kind man, always there to lend a hand to somebody that needed it. He was also a devoted family man; he especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. Mr. Huntress was a very kind hearted person and will be deeply missed by his family and friends. in 1955.2 On 2 June 1966 Walter Carlton Huntress and Sheldon W Weyland conveyed property at the Southerly side of Farview Drive, Sanford, York County, Maine, to Beulah T Paige and Alford S Paige.9 He resided at Old Ross School House, Shapleigh, York County, Maine, on 21 September 1999.10,11
