Wilbur E Lewis was born at Porter, Oxford County, Maine, on 21 September 1915.3,2 He was the son of Ernest Ellsworth Lewis and Eva Estella Macdonald.2 Wilbur E Lewis married on 16 June 1935, at age 19, Vyrene J Day, age 16, daughter of Eben Day and Carrie M Fox.2 Wilbur E Lewis died at his home after a long illness at Limington, York County, Maine, on 26 October 1999 at age 84.3,2
      He attended local schools.
From the age of 10, he drove horse-drawn wagons filled with logs from Porter to Hiram. He became a woodsman who loved working with livestock and showing his animals at fairs throughout the state.
"He took a school bus and converted it to a mobile home," remembered his daughter, Janet Harmon. "He put the cattle in the back and drove from fair to fair. He left in July and we wouldn't see him until fall."
Decked out in his usual hat and suspenders, Mr. Lewis spent those days showing, driving, and trading his livestock. It was a labor of love that produced numerous ribbons and trophies, including a plaque from the Fryeburg Fair Association in recognition of many years of showmanship, his family said.
But more than the trophies, Mr. Lewis loved his animals.
His daughter recalls the piglet her father brought into the house to raise after its mother rejected it. "He treated it like a dog," she said, even when it grew to 900 pounds and could no longer live in the house.
"It was really fun to see him, he just had a way with animals," said his daughter.
Mr. Lewis was road commissioner for Limington for 15 years.
An outgoing man who was honest and "told how it was," Mr. Lewis made friends easily.
According to his daughter, he was a family man who adored his children and grandchildren. She said he "always had a wink for his grandchildren . . . he was always ready to tell a joke."
His seven-year-old great-granddaughter, Victoria Balente, agreed, "He was a wonderful man to me."2 He resided at Limington, York County, Maine, on 26 October 1999.3,2
