Harold L Mason
He attended Hiram schools and graduated from Porter High School, Kezar Falls. He received a bachelor's degree from Bowdoin College in 1948 and a master's in education from the University of Maine in 1967.
His education was interrupted during World War II when he served for three years in the Army Air Forces in England, France, Germany and Belgium.
Mr. Mason began teaching mathematics and coaching junior varsity basketball at Falmouth High School in 1948. He became submaster and varsity basketball coach in 1951, and assistant superintendent for School Union 13 in 1956. When Falmouth withdrew from Union 13 to become a separate school system, he became superintendent of schools on Jan. 1, 1963.
During his career he served on many education boards and committees. During his tenure Falmouth High School received accreditation in 1960 and reaccredited in 1965, and the junior high school was accredited in 1966. In 1970 the juniorsenior school complex was accredited. He resigned as superintendent Sept. 1, 1976. The gymnasium at the Plummer-Motz elementary school was dedicated to him and named Harold L. Mason Gymnasium.
"He loved teaching," said his wife, Charlotte Watson Mason. "I never heard in all the years he was in the public of anyone who disliked him or had hard feelings."
She said the children liked her husband very much, and felt they could relate to him. He was young when he first came to the schools in Falmouth, and was a baseball coach.
In 1954 he organized a credit union to serve Cumberland County teachers. He became president and, along with his wife, operated the credit union out of their home for 33 years. This organization grew from a small-time operation doing business from the dining room table into a thriving credit union with branches of its own.
Both Mr. Mason and his wife retired from active participation in the credit union in October of 1990, but he continued as chairman of the board until 1995 and was on the board until the time of his death.
Mr. Mason and the former Charlotte Watson of Kezar Falls, his childhood sweetheart, were married in 1946. They settled in Falmouth and raised five sons. He had a special interest in genealogy and had traced his roots back to John Alden and the Mayflower. He also participated in many genealogical societies.
He was a member of the Falmouth Congregational Church and served on the board of trustees. He was a past deacon and past secretary of deacons, as well as past superintendent of the church school.
Mr. Mason was also secretary of the Missionary Education and Social Action Committee.
"He was very versatile," his wife said of his many vocations, skills and hobbies. "There wasn't anything that didn't interest him."
He loved the outdoors and fished and hunted throughout the state of Maine all his life. He traveled to South Brook near Grand Lake Stream for more than 30 years with friends.
He enjoyed gardening and loved his farm in South Hiram where he had extensive vegetable gardens, fruit trees, beehives and where he tended his fields and forest.
He built his own log cabin on Caribou Lake in the 1970s, transporting the materials for the camp on a raft eight miles across Chesuncook Lake and over Caribou Lake to his lot, since there was no road at the time.
He was a member of the Model A Club and owned and operated a 1930 Model A, which he had restored. He was a volunteer at Maine Audubon Society, a driver and supervisor for Falmouth Transportation, and in charge of the state's VITA program for 10 years.
Beyond all of that, he was basically a family man, his wife said "He had eight brothers and sisters and there wasn't anything he wouldn't do for any of them," she said. He also went camping, fishing, hunting and skating with his own five sons, among other activities.5 He resided at Falmouth, Cumberland County, Maine, circa 27 June 1999.2
