Gerald B'Rells was born at The Hague, The Netherlands, on 19 February 1900.2,3,4 He was the son of Cornelis Barels and Ida Antonia Hasenbosch.1 Gerald B'Rells (of S. Portland, ME) married at South Portland, Cumberland County, Maine, on 2 September 1929, at age 29, Mary Elizabeth Huntress, age 23, of Hoboken, NJ, daughter of Frederick William Huntress and Caroline Wainwright Lowell.1,5,4 Gerald B'Rells died at Columbia, Richland County, South Carolina, on 19 August 1968 at age 68.2,6 He was buried at Elmwood Cemetery, Columbia, Richland County, South Carolina.4
"Gerald (whose original name was Gerardus Maria Barels) was said to have attended a boarding school (in The Netherlands?) and then obtained a technical degree (in some form of electrical engineering) from a school in Germany. It is not clear how such an education was financed, since none of Gerardus' relatives seem to have been very well off financially.
Gerardus left Rotterdam, the Netherlands, July 24th 1923 as a 2nd class passenger on the ship Nieuw Amsterdam and arrived in New York City on August 3. (Again, it is not clear how this relatively-expensive trip was financed.) According to the ship manifest, Gerardus was an electrician. He gave an address in The Hague of 's-Gravenzandelaan 32, although the "Bevolkingsregister" indicates that the Barels family moved to Twentstraat 26 on 19 June 1923. He listed a Mr. Schwartz of 1956 Ba[N]gate Avenue in New York City as an acquaintance.
"It appears that Gerardus moved to New Jersey, either immediately or fairly shortly after arriving in the United States. He apparently studied English and Electrical Engineering at night school. [His occupation at that time is not known.] There was some mention of his taking engineering courses at Columbia University in New York, but that is by no means certain.
"He changed his name (for unknown reasons) from Gerardus Maria Barels to Gerald B'Rells, probably before he was naturalized on April 8, 1929 in Newark, New Jersey. At the time of his naturalization Gerald was 29 years old, was 5 feet 8 inches tall, had blue eyes and brown eyes, and was living at 1025 Washington Street in Hoboken, New Jersey. Around the time of his marriage, however, he moved to Jersey City, New Jersey as mentioned above."4 Gerald B'Rells was an electrical engineer at South Portland, Cumberland County, Maine.1 He resided at Columbia, Richland County, South Carolina, in 1968.2
