Howard Bancroft Huntress was born at Winchendon, Worcester Co, Massachusetts, on 28 March 1909.4,1,3,5,6,2,7 He (of Andover, Mass.) married at Salem, Rockingham Co, New Hampshire,, on 3 June 1932, at age 23, Eleanor Leslie Murray, age 20, of Newtonville, Mass., daughter of Michael William Murray and Leslie Lougee Morris, his 8th cousin twice removed, ceremony performed by Walter Priest Brockway, of Salem, N.H., Minister.8,6,2 Howard Bancroft Huntress died of a heart attack at Carolina Meadows, Chapel Hill, Orange Co, North Carolina, on 4 January 1999 at age 89 years, 9 months and 7 days.9,10
While at Wickwire Spencer Steel Co in Palmer, MA I think he was involved in wire cable design, documenting designs already in use and designing new configurations.

At American Brake Shoe, Mahwah, NJ I remember him talking a lot about Crossing Frogs http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Railroad_switch#Frog_.28common_crossing.29 perhaps refining designs or selecting better alloys for use in making frogs.

His main activity focused on Powder Metallurgy. He developed materials for use in automotive braking systems. Both for the conventional (at the time) drum brake systems and later in the now conventional disc braking systems. ABS was in competition with Raybestos (sp?) in the automotive market.

He became very involved in the design and production of the braking system for the B52 Bomber in the 50’s. I worked one summer at Brake Shoe running a dynamometer, testing the various friction material compounds for the B52.

Howard also was innovative in early computer simulation. As I recall when the Sperry Univac came out – he wrote a program that would simulate the braking requirements of a train running from New York City to Washington. He inputted the terrain profile for the route, all the starts and stops, speeds, etc. Then he set up the metallurgical characteristics for the braking system… things like specific heat, thermal conductivity, density and whatever. He then used finite analysis to determine temperatures that would be attained during the run, varying friction coefficients, wear characteristics and god knows what else. It was very useful to the company and I am not sure but he might have been the first or one of the first to ever do this kind of stuff. And aalso remember that all this stuff was done with punched cards. Judy might be able to shed more light on this.

He had many patents. He graduated from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in June 1931.11 Howard Bancroft Huntress was a Civil Engineer on 3 June 1932.2 He resided at Andover, Essex Co, Massachusetts, on 3 June 1932.211 He resided at 38 Thorndike Street, Palmer, Hampden Co, Massachusetts, on 2 December 1936.3 Howard Bancroft Huntress was employed by Wickwire Spencer Steel Company at Springfield Road, Palmer, Hampden Co, Massachusetts, on 2 December 1936.311 He resided at Massachusetts before 1951.4 He resided at Chapel Hill, Orange Co, North Carolina, in 1999.4

Huntress was listed as the head of a family on the 1820 Census at Fryeburg Addition, Oxford Co, Maine. In his family were 1 male between 10 and 16 years of age (Samuel), one age 45 and over (Samuel), and 2 females between 26 and 45 (Hannah and unk).14 Samuel D. "Humtress" was listed as the head of a family on the 1830 Census at Fryeburg, Oxford Co, Maine. In his family were 1 male age 15 to 20; 1 female age 40 to 50; and 1 male age 50 to 60. The male (age 15 to 20) in the household could possibly have been someone helping Samuel on the farm after the death of his son in 1828..15,16 Samuel D. Huntress was listed as the head of a family on the 1840 Census at Stow, Oxford Co, Maine. In his family were 1 female age 5 to 10; 1 female age 40 to 50; and 1 male age 50 to 60. The female (age 5 to 10) in the household is a puzzle, since Samuel's second wife, Alice, had no children of that age from her first marriage. It's possible that this child may be one of Alice's grandchilren; probably one of Eleanor (Abbott) Cook's children. Eleanor's husband (Thomas Cook) apparently died about 1839-40. Alice's age was 62 and should have been in the 60 to 70 category.17,16

The History of the First Congregational Church, Wareham, Massachusetts has the following biography:

Rev. Edward Seymour Huntress, the ninth pastor, was born at Portsmouth, N. H., July 9, 1840. His father bore the same name and his mother was a member of the Adams family, one of the outstanding families in the history of the Commonwealth.

Mr. Huntress attended Waterville College, now Colby College, at Waterville, Maine, in 1863 and 1864; Bangor Theological Seminary, 1866-1867; Andover Theological Seminary in 1869.
He was ordained at Wareham in September, 1869, having graduated from Andover the preceding June, and served as pastor of this church in 1869-1870.

In 1871, he went to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where he ministered to a Congregational Church, in that city, during 1871-1872.

Returning to the East, he was pastor of the Congregational Church, of Maynard, Mass., 1872-1874; pastor at Derry, N. H., 1875-1877; Wallingford, Vt. 1877-1879; Dayville, Ct., 1879-1888; and of the First Congregational Church, Ware, Mass., during 1888 and 1889.

After preaching twenty years his health broke down and he removed to Amherst, Mass., where he lived for fifteen years, during the period his children were in college. After leaving Amherst he went to Mt. Dora, Florida, where he made his home until his death, April 22, 1925, at the age of 85 years. Mrs. Sarah B. Huntress, widow of Mr. Huntress, who will be ninety-six years old on the 16th of July (1939), in a recent letter written from Mt. Dora, spoke very pleasantly of her experience as a pastor's wife in Wareham. She spoke of the kindness of the people and the spirit of unity that seemed to prevail among the members of the church at that time.

In her letter she alludes very feelingly to a class of boys, of which she was the teacher, she says "I have lived in many places and always found people and things hard to part with, but nothing so hard as to give up that class of boys; I cannot remember their names but can still see them crowding into the pews and listening attentively to what I had to say about the lesson and other things. It is a long way from 1869, but I hope the church has prospered and the town grown in wealth and importance."15 Rev. Edward Seymour Huntress was a teacher and clergyman at Mount Dora, Lake Co, Florida.4 Edward S. Huntress entered the Boys High School, Portsmouth, Rockingham Co, New Hampshire on September 1852.16 He was pastor of the First Congregational Church, Derry, Rockingham Co, New Hampshire after 2 July 1860.17 Rev.
