The Pennsylvania Sled
Dog Club was founded in 1971 with the express purpose "to conduct sled dog races, and
to promote the safe and humane racing, driving and training of sled dogs."
Today the club has over 150 members from Pennsylvania, New York, Ohio, Delaware, Virginia,
Connecticut, Rhode Island, Maryland, New Jersey and Alaska. In the 1996-1997 season, the Pennsylvania
Sled Dog Club hosted eight weight pulls and three snow races, as well as rig runs,
training sessions, club meetings, and the annual summer campout. Classes at
club races range from the International Sled Dog Racing Association's Sanctioned Unlimited
Class right down to Pee Wee classes. Sportsman classes for beginning and
recreational mushers are very popular. Many club members compete in weight pulls run
by the Pennsylvania Sled Dog Club and ski-joring is also becoming popular and is offered at all of the Pennsylvania
Sled Dog Club's snow races.
The Pennsylvania Sled Dog Club has been a member club and strong supporter of the
International Sled Dog Racing Association (ISDRA) for over twenty years. Club events
are run under ISDRA rules and many club events apply for ISDRA sanctioning.
An organized and enthusiastic Junior
Program is another important facet of the Pennsylvania Sled Dog Club. The club offers not
only special racing classes for youngsters, but also seminars and an opportunity to win
club awards by working with adult officials at club events. Depending on their age
and abilities, juniors may help Pee Wee racers to the start line, or assist the Chief
Timer.
Recreational teams, rig
racers, weight pullers, officials, juniors, and professional sprint racers: these are the many faces of the
Pennsylvania Sled Dog Club. Such diversity, bonded together by a shared love of the
dogs and sled dog sports, is the core and the strength of the Pennsylvania Sled
Dog Club.
