"After finding out what it actually
was, it was time to dismantle the guitar for a thorough clean
and service so imagine my suprise when I find a 440P stamp
on the neck and heel joint. I have not been able to find any
reference to this model any where ...in fact it seemingly doesn't
exist!!! It has all the same features as a 540P except for the
fact it has not been routed out at the back of the original Edge
trem and there is no lettering on the pickups. I'm fairly certain
they are the original stacked singles. The bridge p/up (F2) has
been tastefully replaced with an authentic Seymour Duncan JB
so that with the combination of a 5-way switch ala RG and a coil
tap on the Tone knob (not push/pull) the Power can produce an
amazing array of sounds.
Even though this guitar is extremely playable in every sense
I tend to feel the rarity of the 540P, let alone a 440P which
I can't even verify as having been made (apart from the fact
that I have one), would have to be the main reason for bidding
on this rare piece of Ibanez history. Definitely Made in Japan
hence the 440 designation, probably a prototype and not one of
the US assembled 540P's. I do value this guitar pretty highly
as a rarity (also sounds wicked) but my reserve is very reasonable.
Condition of the guitar cosmetically - 8/10, jumbo frets ok but
will need dressing, neck straight, a very nice orig. handfinished
Wizard neck which is slightly rounder than the flatter Wizard
II, which I personally find more comfortable as I'm only using
the "Classic" profile necks nowadays. More of a rock
neck than shred neck I suppose! The headstock logo is slightly
worn, a few little dents, nothing major and NO cracks at the
neck join or anywhere else. Electronics all clean, the Edge trem
was dismantled, cleaned and serviced and I do mean completely,
dubious parts replaced, re-intonated and works like a dream.
(any idea how many parts make up an Edge?)
Anyway, check out the pics and if you require more info feel
free to email me. Oh yes, it also comes with the original Ibanez
logo factory case which is definitely a bonus for the collector
....and this guitar is highly collectable. No, I don't have the
original bridge p/up (it was only an F2 ...easy if you want)
but the JB kills it anyway. The Pro "Power" is an unusual
guitar, completely different in appearance to the other 540 /
440 series, almost a morphing of the Sabre & Radius with
a hefty dose of RG ...well it's as thick as the RG basswood body.
Remember, the Power was only really made for one year '87 and
are literally as rare as hens teeth. This model had a lot to
do with attracting the right guitarists who later endorsed their
own Ibanez models so the name of Power was certainly appropriate
in that sense ........ and it's bark is as good as it's bite!
