Wise Old Owl
Charles Darkfeather had spent decades living and working in Paragon City
before a vicious home invasion in the middle of the night left him injured and
dieing. As Charles lay in his own blood, his eyes wandered around his
room, resting briefly on those things he feared he would never see in the
afterlife his grandfather had believed in. Suddenly his eyes felt drawn to
an old talisman
his
grandfather had given him. Laying there in the midst of the shambles his
home had become was a necklace comprised mostly of owl feathers.....and it was
glowing. Fear was replaced by anger as Charles believed that this glow was
a hallucination brought on by his own impending death.
"Your life is now at a crossroads Darkfeather, which path will you chose?"
With his fading eyesight, Charles caught a vague glimpse of what appeared to be an owl sitting behind where the necklace rested. He was not surprised that it was an owl he saw. His grandfather had told him many of the ancient tales in which the owl was seen as one of the guides for the dead and he learned the proper response to this question. As his eyesight continued to fade, Charles heard himself say "Life. I will always chose the path of life."
With a faint chuckle the spirit responded. "So be it, little brother.
From now on I will be your guide. Through my totem you will receive my
wisdom, strength and power. With these you will help others as you were
not helped tonight." And with those words the owl vanished and
Charles found himself restored! No longer battered and bleeding nor close
to death, Charles found himself to be in the prime of his life. A time he
had passed decades ago.
Placing the necklace around his neck Charles again heard a faint chuckle as he felt new strength flow through his body. Looking out at the night before him Charles vowed that he would do what he could to protect those around him as well as punish those who would seek to harm them.
