Physical Modeling Synthesis

Analog PM clarinet

Here is a photo of my experimental electronic implementation of a "physical modeling" clarinet. The circuitry produces clarinet-like oscillations in response to a control voltage that is analogous to blowing pressure. It also can be configured to demonstrate the "period-doubling route to chaos", a characteristic of a large class of nonlinear mechanical systems.

Physical Modeling of Clarinet:

Overview:
Overview and theory of model.

Circuit Schematics:

Reed Circuit:
The circuit that generates the reed transmission function T.

Algorithm Circuit:
A schematic showing how the flow-continuity equation can be solved.

Sample/Delay/Convolve:
The circuitry for simulating the linear response of the instrument bore.

Low-pass Filter:
A double cascaded 2-pole Butterworth filter with 1oct/V frequency control.
