Dear IMS Walkabout Volunteers,

As our second trimester comes to an end and I reflect over the year up to this point, I am reminded what a wonderful help each of you has been in keeping IMS a safe, positive environment for our kids.  Your diligence in getting here for your scheduled time and braving the cold weather as you walkabout the campus is much appreciated by Mr. Adams, our staff and me.  Having 950 students on campus passing through the hallways could be daunting without your presence.  I hope the experience has been positive for you too.  We look forward to continuing to partner with you during the last trimester of this year and many more.

Sincerely,

Corrine DeRosa

Principal, IMS

What is WalkAbout?

The WalkAbout Program at IMS is a PTSA sponsored, school supported, parent staffed program that provides a positive adult presence on campus during peak traffic times.  The additional adult presence discourages inappropriate behavior allowing students to feel safe.  It also gives parents the opportunity to volunteer in an area that directly impacts their child's safety and gives them an additional connection to a big part of their child's day.

The program was started in the Fall of 2001 at IMS with principals Ron Thiele and Corrine DeRosa and it received a Washington State PTSA award the first year!

WalkAbout receives great administrative support from our teachers and staff!

It is a very popular program among working Moms and Dads because of the flexible times to volunteer!

All IMS parents are welcome to participate after completing a one time training session!

Mission Statement/Purpose

To provide a positive and safe learning environment for students by having trained parent volunteers at school during high traffic times  (before/after school and lunch times) moving through the campus in pairs to discourage inappropriate behaviors and act as a positive adult presence.

The WalkAbout program coincides with the Issaquah School District "Safe and Positive Environment" policy (page 23).          IMS Handbook

Maywood Middle School also has a successful WalkAbout Program that started in the Fall of 2004.  Our two schools collaborate and support one another by opening up our WalkAbout training sessions for parents attending either school.
