VALDIVIA Precolumbian VENUS figures: The Valdivia culture is the oldest precolumbian culture in Ecuador. The famous little female Valdivia clay figurines are known as Venuses. Because they are easy to make and highly desirable, they are widely faked.Bottom line: Don't invest a lot of money in Pre-Columbian artifacts unless you also plan to invest in having them authenticated. (yes, the one at right is a copy) Small Pre-Columbian shards are fairly plentiful and shouldn't cost much money if they are incomplete and made of clay.
Jade and Metal artifacts are hard to authenticate as they can be made from materials identical to the originals. So be especially wary of Jade or Gold artifacts
THE MORAL OF THE STORY? You get what you pay for. Even on eBay, you can't buy Real Relics for the price of a Rusty Repro. But if you're not careful, you CAN pay a fortune for a fake. I hope now you feel more confident shopping. Don't be hard on yourself if you indeed have bought a new "antique"--we've all done it. Chalk it up to experience. If you bought it on eBay,it's your right to return it.
