Sashimi
I'm a fat happy sushi eating pig.
The wife after hearing me whine snivel and beg for a week took me to this place that offered all you can eat sushi.
Many pieces later and my sushi sashimi jones has passed. I'm good for a few more weeks. Raw fish. Who woulda thought some of my favorite foods would be what I used to use for bait.
The flying fish roe was delightfully crunchy and salty, while the smelt roe in comparison wasn't as crunchy and had kind of a sweet taste. The octopus wasn't the smaller pickeled kind I'm used to, but still all in all wasn't that bad. The meat was cut thick. Suprisingly it was still about as tender as the thin sliced salmon I've become used to at the local Chinese buffet. The pickings for the rest of the family were kind of slim. There was indeed something for everyone but I was probably the one wanting oriental more than anyone else.
Suprisingly I've become enough of a wasabi eater to tell real wasabi from root radish. But hey who am I to complain after two carafes of saki and many plates of sushi later. A fat happy sushi eating pig, that's who.
Many people don't realize the difference between sushi and sashimi. The one denotes a preperation with rice, sushi. While the other denotes raw fish or seafood, sashimi. It's also considered impolite to order anything but sushi or sashimi from your sushi chef. All other orders should go through the servers. When trading pieces of sushi between plate to plate it's proper manners to turn the chopsticks around using the back of them to pass food between plates.
Live and learn. Learn to live. Enjoy the small pleasures this life holds. For me sushi is one of those small pleasures. Lucky for me it isn't very fattening either. Hey! Another reason I can use when trying to talk the wife into trying sushi. She never tried crab rangoons until I convinced her it really didn't have that much crab in it. Now she loves crab rangoons. But raw fish is a bit of a push from prepared, cooked stuff so I'll have to keep plugging away I guess.
The name of the place we ate was named "Ichiban". It's located on Clark Road in sunny Sarasota Florida. It's a small place, family owned, family run. If by chance you ever make it down this way consider it one of your stops. Unless of course your one of those more upscale customers and would prefer to pay fifty bucks more for ambiance. In which case try "Dahruma". They do the food prep at table, and have really good food, along with a fairly nice sushi bar.
Dammit. I just did a food review. I definately think I'm going to stop now before I end up cat blogging or something. But I am still a fat happy sushi eating pig. And don't you forget it.
