You are sitting next to an old gray stone covered with spirals, it is worn from years of wind and rain and the passage of time. As you lean in close to the cool, rough surface you hear a low, humming whisper of power as the stone rests. The intense weight of the earth reverberates and inside you feel an inner calm and sense of great peace.
The Nature of Earth
Because we live on the earth, eat our food and build our houses from it, Earth is considered the most stable of all elements, and that ruling covers domestic life, financial matters and anything to do with prosperity and how it ties to the land. Grounding is the basic nature of earth, it brings our lives down to reality, it gives nourishing food and it accepts decaying waste. It is very slow in its movements but that slow movement has the power to move mountains and valleys.

As you lie back in the welcome cover you hear a soft voice, a sweet and quiet song that flows as the wind does. The simple freedom of the air elates and inside you feel a rousing clarity and movement of your soul.
The Nature of Air
Air is has long been considered the element of communication because we speak to each other using our breath and by sending words through the air. We also share knowledge and seek truth through communication so air rules these traits also. Vibration is the basic nature of air, it changes our minds and thoughts and shows us freedom through the boundlessness of its movement. Air is the quickest of movers and as such, is at the heart of any project that needs to be finished quickly and with a minimum of extraneous exertion.

The renewing temperature wraps around your body and soon the heat has lulled you with its silent calls. The vibrant hotness of the fire undulates and inside you feel transformed and overcome with ardor.
The Nature of Fire
Whenever humans think of fire they rightly think of destruction and change, which is why fire is associated so strongly with these concepts. We use fire to heat our homes and cook our food, but we are also using the fire inside us to keep our bodies warm and our passions alight. Transformation is the basic nature of fire, what fire touches it destroys, tranforms and creates anew. Fire moves quickly, but it is not concerned with the fact that it is moving, it is concerned with how much fuel it is consuming and how much air it has left.

Water Meditation
You are sitting on the edge of a breaking sea, the waves curl into a perfect shell of deep blue. As you listen to the roar of the surf you swear you can hear the howling voice of the rolling ocean.
The swelling emotion of the water dilates and inside you feel a rush of love and a gentle awakening.
The Nature of Water
The first water we know is the water of the womb, and some say this is why we all have a longing for the ocean, but it is just as easy to say that water appeals to the depths of our own emotions. Just like the flowing seas, our emotions flow within and outside of us and always move to conform to their container. Intuition is the basic nature of water, looking at it we can't help but feel things, like love, sadness, and joy. Water lives in the middle ground of movement, it cleanses and nourishes us but it also rages in storms and waves that will drag you down to the depths.

Spirit Meditation
You are part of a vast sea of stars, colors beyond words drift past you. The ethereal light reaches out to you, and as if in answer, you reach back. Deep within you notice a subtle awe, of the wonder of yourself.
The Nature of Spirit
This is the trickiest and most elusive of elements, and to most it is not even a proper element compared to our friends above. Spirit is an immanent presence, it is there in all natural elements all the time, and therefore present in us. We feel it when we have a spiritual experience or something equally aweinspiring such as sex. I often call the spiritual un/consciousness inside my body 'The Pilot' for it exists in the black darkness of our own eyes when we look in the mirror.
Hydrogen is Spirit Theory
A quick aside for something you may have been wondering about, now don't laugh. Read the wikipedia page and come back here, interesting stuff isn't it? This whole humorous thing came about in a chemistry class when me and a friend posited that there was an actual element for each of the classical elements. That turned out to be an exercise in futility, but we did come out the other side saying, 'But Hydrogen, that's special.' Indeed it is, lightest known element, present in everything in the universe, the stardust fueling stars and a constituent of water. There's a reason water is the most feeling element. Hydrogen is present in our bodies, it is invisible and completely combustible and it's lighter than air. Plus, heavy water is a well know possible fuel source for fusion. What more do you need? Okay, so maybe it's a jest, but one founded in the strangeness of the universe. It's become a personal joke because we know science will one day explain away the soul, so perhaps it really is just so simple as: Hydrogen is spirit.
