-Our esteemed townsman, Frank
Moore, was united in marriage to Miss
Nora Ingalls on the 16th inst. After a
short stay at Adams, they returned to
their home here Friday evening, when
they were surprised by about twenty
jolly people, who had, through the
kindness of his son, already taken pos-
session of his new and as yet unfinished
house, and were enjoying a good old-
fashioned house warming until their ar-
rival, when a cordial welcome and
hearty congratulations were tendered
the newly wedded couple. Meanwhile a
few young folks had, through the invi-
tation of the older ones, betaken them-
selves to the old home and prepared an
oyster supper, to which Mr. and Mrs.
Moore and their unexpected guests
were invited to, after which festivities
were resumed until near morning, when
the party dispersed, each wishing the
host and hostess many years of happi-
ness in their new and elegant home. Ex-
cellent music was furnished by the
Eddy brothers. Among the out of town
guests we noticed Mr. and Mrs. George
Harp of Pratt's Hollow, and Mr. and
Mrs. Rolin Case, of Perryville, the
ladies being a sister and niece of the
bride.

PETERBORO
Peterboro, Sept. 18--When Nicholas Ingalls, a lifetime resident of this place, left his home Saturday and did not return at meal time, a search was instituted in the woods by volunteers who feared the old man had met with a fatal accident. During an unavailing search, a woman at the Ingalls home went to the rear of the house to throw out a pan of water and there discovered the body half hidden in some tall grass, where he had fallen. Corner Chase was called and gave a verdict of death from apoplexy.

A few years since, William Evans, of Boston, moved by his strong and enduring attachment for his native town, and a deep solicitude for its poor, donated the sum of $15,000, the annual income of which is to be used for the poor of the town. By mutual written agreement between Mr. Evans and the Trustees of the Academy, (which has very appropriately been named the "Evans Academy,") this fund is placed in the hands of the said Trustees, the annual income of which is at their disposal, except that the said Trustees are required and bound by the donor, to set apart each year, and hand over to a committee of three ladies of the town, (to be chosen by the town, or by said Trustees,) from the income of said fund, the sum of $300, to be used by them at their own discretion for the benefit of the poor of the town, as they shall deem best to promote the objects of the donor; the said ladies not being at all accountable to the donor or Trustees are prohibited from exacting any pay from the students from the poor families of the town, for their tuition at the Academy.
"The Evans Academy," thus sustained, chiefly, by the income of the Evans fund, to which is added its current receipts, is managed and its affairs directed, by a local board of 12 trustees. The officers of this Board for the year 1868 are Col. Charles D. Miller, President; Hon. Caleb Calkins, Treasurer, and Rev. William F. Bridge, Secretary. Its teachers are Rev William F. Bridge, A. M., Principal, and Miss Susan Marvin, Assistant. It has a small philosophical apparatus, and a library of about 300 volumes. Its whole number of students, who for the past year, including all who have attended in the several terms, is about 100. Provision is made for thorough course of study in all branches usually taught in Academic schools.

December 29, 1818 - 8 May 1899
CONRAD INGALLS, a prosperous and practical farmer of Smithfield, is
pleasantly located in District No. 10, where he owns upward of two hundred
acres of valuable land, which is well improved and amply supplied with
convenient and substantial farm buildings. He is a native of Madison County,
born in Lenox, December 29, 1818, a son of James and Annie (Moot) Ingalls.
On the paternal side our subject is of English descent. His grandfather,
Joseph Ingalls, a native of England, emigrated to America in the eighteenth
century, settling in Connecticut. He at once identified himself with the
welfare of his adopted country, and during the Revolutionary War served as
Captain in the army. He died when in the prime of life, at the early age of
forty years, leaving two sons and three daughters.
On his mother's side our subject is of German ancestry, his grandfather,
Conrad Moot, having been the son of one John Moot, who was born in Germany,
and came to America in 1750. John Moot left his native land in May, and
crossed the ocean in a sailing vessel, being on the water more than six
months, not touching shore until December 25, the same year. He was then a
boy of sixteen, without money, obliged to work out his passage; and the
officers of the vessel sold his time for five years. He settled in New York,
and there married, subsequently taking up land from the government in
Rensselaer County, where he spent the remainder of his life, dying at the age
of eighty years. He had a family of five children, none of whom are now
living.
James Ingalls, father of our subject, was born in Connecticut; but from the
time he was three years old lived with an uncle in Columbia County, this
State. He had inherited much of the energy and enterprise of his forefathers,
and on attaining his majority started out to make for himself a home, if not
a fortune. Accordingly, in 1807 he came to Madison County, and took up new
land from the government in Lenox. The present town site was then a
wilderness, with an occasional clearing in which the smoke of some pioneer's
cabin could be seen. Railroads had never been heard of. Canals and public
highways were conspicuous only by their absence, the necessary journeys to
mill and market being made on horseback over a road marked by blazed trees.
He erected a log cabin, in which he installed his wife, formerly Annie Moot,
as mistress; and the family subsisted on the food they raised or the game
found in the forests. The wife and mother ably did her part in caring for the
household, being kept busy in carding, spinning, and weaving the homespun
from which she fashioned the garments of the family. He labored unceasingly,
improving his land, doing a good business as general farmer and stockraiser.
He and his wife spent their last years on the homestead, where they died at
the ages of eighty-two and eighty-three years, respectively. Both were
worthy people and lived true Christian lives, being consistent members of the
Universalist church. In politics Mr. INGALLS was a Whig. They reared five
sons and one daughter, of whom the following are living: James and Joseph,
who live in Lenox; and our subject.
Conrad INGALLS received his education in the district schools of his native
town, and commenced the duties of life at an early age by assisting his
father on the farm. He continued at home thus engaged until thirty-two years
of age. In 1851 he was united in marriage with Lydia Jane Tucker, a native
of Lenox, born in 1826, a daughter of Eli and Eleanor Tucker, both of whom
are now deceased. Mr. Tucker was a shoe-dealer in the town of Lenox, and a
respected citizen of that place. Three years after his marriage our subject
came to Smithfield, and bought a tract of land, containing fifty-six acres,
which constitutes a part of his present homestead. He began farming on a
small scale, but, as time progressed, increased his business and continued to
add to his landed estate, until now he has a rich and productive farm of two
hundred and ten acres, all under excellent cultivation. He carries on general
farming and dairying, having from twenty to thirty good cows. He makes a
specialty of raising hay, and is ranked among the progressive and successful
agriculturists of his county. To Mr. and Mrs. Ingalls have been born three
children: Albert, who is married, and lives at home; Willis A., married, and
lives in McGrawville, Cortland County; Owen, who is a civil engineer,
residing in the District of Columbia. Politically, our subject is a steadfast
Republican, and a man of influence in his Community, which he has served for
four years as Assessor and for two years as Road Commissioner. Mrs. Ingalls
is a valued member of the Methodist Episcopal Church.

STEPHEN G. MOOT
Stephen G. Moot a prominent and
wealthy farmer of the town of Lincoln
died about 4 o'clock Monday morning at
Binghamton State Hospital where he had
been for several months for treatment.
The news of his death came as a shock to
many of his friends who did not know
that his general health had been gradu-

pital.
Stephen Garner Moot was a son of Conrad
G. Moot and Mary A. Chapman Moot
who were among the pioneer families of
this section of Madison county. His ma-
ternal grandfather was the late Col.
Stephen Capman, through whose influ-

last fall his condition became so serious
that he was taken to the Binghamton

his life had passed at his farm home,
he was interested in various enterprises
and was a stockholder and director of the
First National Bank of Canastota since

OBITUARY.
-------
MRS. STEPHEN MOOT.
Katherine, wife of Stephen Moot,
died at the family residence west of
Clockville Tuesday forenoon. Mrs.
Moot had been in poor health for
some time, but her illness had been
considered serious for only a month
or so. Everything that skill and care-
ful nursing could suggest was done to
prolong her life, but without avail
and for some days it was certain that
the end was near. Mrs. Moot knew
that she was going to die and she was
resigned that the will of God should
be done.
Mrs. Moot was of good old Dutch
stock. She was the daughter of Adam
Clock, who was descended from Con-
rad Clock, who with his sons came
from the Mohawk Valley in 1792 and
settled in the vicinity of Clockville,
and from whom the village took its
name. Mrs. Moot was born in 1837
and married Mr. Moot in 1857. Her
home life had always been one of the
greatest contentment and happiness.
She was of a kind and gentle nature
and a noble character, seen to best
advantage in her own home. Her life
was given to ministering to her hus-
band, her daughter and those near
to her. Surviving besides the husband
is one daughter, Miss Kathleen
Moot, one sister, Mrs. Abraham Tut-
tle, and one brother, Duane Clock, all
of whome feel that the loss they have
suffered in the death of the devoted
wife, mother and sister is irreparable.
Funeral services were held at the
late home Friday afternoon at 2
o'clock. Rev. A. J. Abeel of Syra-
cuse, who is at present supplying the
pulpit of the Canastota Presbyterian
Church officiated. Miss Maude Ros-
bach, of this village, sang very sweet-
ly a favorite hymn. Burial was made
in Mt. Pleasant cemetery.

KATHLEEN MOOT DIES

-----------
Mrs. Kathleen W. Moot formerly
well known in Canastota died at the

Stephen and Kate Clock Moot. She

of Oneida graduating from the high
school there about 27 years ago. She

the stage under the name of Muriel
Brandt. The stage did not prove a
success and she returned to her home
at Clockville. After the death of her
parents she lived on the farm for a
while trying to work it with overseers
but a few years ago she left for Sy-
racuse where she has since been. Un-
fortunate investments or expenses
made inroads on the estate from
$50,000 to $100,000 left by her fath-
er. Some Syracuse papers stated that
she died of starvation but old friends
here do not think that this is true
as she still must have some claim on
the once famous farm of Clockville.
Her mother was a sister of Duane
Clock and the funeral will be held
from his home in Clockville Friday
afternoon at 2 o'clock. Burial will
be in the Moot family plot at Mount
Pleasant cemetery.
Other relatives in this vicinity are
LeGrand Colton and Mrs. Lee Phil-
lips. Friends of the deceased here say
that for several years Miss Moot has
not been well and that her mind has
probably been affected by her illness.
Some time ago after the death of
Samuel Smith she claimed a widow's
right to his property saying that they
had been married in Boston years
ago but nothing was proved and it
was thought that the story and claim
were just a flight of imagination. In
Syracuse however she seems to have
gone by the name of Smith.
