Ingalls DNA Project

How many modern-day Ingalls are there? A quick search of whitepages.com indicates a total of 2,917 Ingalls surnames in America in 2006-- each state is represented with West Virginia having the fewest (3) and California the most (298). A search of Canada indicates 291 Ingalls surnames in all the provinces.

In terms of a Family DNA Genealogy project, the numbers seem perfect. Enough to find a number of matches, but not too many to make the results meaningless.

But ... the marvel of Y-DNA testing allows us to go back many generations ... to the time in the 9th century when Scandinavian pirates were said to have settled in Lincolnshire, England. A sufficient number of samples will map the travels of these early ancestors to their descendants as they spread across the world.
