Effective with this issue, I will no longer be publishing The Ingalls Inquirer. I started the newsletter in 1984 and this will complete ten years of gathering, sharing items that may have interested you in your family history research. This would not have been possible without your assistance! I will continue with my genealogy hobby, still trying to "prove" my Ingalls line, as well as, many other affiliate lines. All materials for the supplement to Charles Burleigh's 1903 edition are forwarded to: Linda Wright, Orlando, FL, and any questions should be directed to her.
Copies of The Ingalls Inquirer, Volumes 1 - 10, are on file at: Lynn Historical Society, Lynn, MA 01902 and LDS Family History Department, Salt Lake City, UT 64150.

AUTUMN
'Tis pleasant on a fine spring morn
To see the buds expand;
'Tis pleasant in the summertime
To see the fruitful land;
'Tis pleasant on a winter's night
To sit around the blaze;
But what are joys like these, my boys,
To merry autumn days!
We hail the merry autumn days
When leaves are turning red,
Because they're far more beautiful
Than anyone has said.
We hail the merry harvesttime,
The gayest of the year,
The time of rich and bounteous crops,
Rejoicing and good cheer.

INGALLS, Abbie E., 85, Surry, June 12, 1993.
In Memory of ABBIE INGALLS In the years that Abbie drove the school bus
and taxi, she never had on accident, not even a flat tire. She was on expert
of keeping her machinery in good order. Often she would get calls in the
middle of the night and would drive to Winter Harbor or the Bangor Airport
to take people where they wanted to go, in any weather. One snowy day, she
had to clear a fallen tree with an axe to get her school bus by. She loved
to sing, especially comic songs, like "Get away old may, get away". She and
Amy Jordan were a great singing team. Abbie Ingalls and Lena Cunningham were
such a pair that children called them AbbieLena - one name. Lena thinks
Abbie painted their house four or five times, and constantly kept the big
house in Surry Village in good order. The "AbbielLna" guest house was a
favored spot for visitors, some of whom returned year after year.

Extraction from NEHGS, Nexus, Vol. VII, No. , 3 & 4,
Notable Kin: (Mrs.) LAURA ELIZABETH INGALLS
WILDER, dau of CHARLES INGALLS and CAROLINE QUINER.
(Mrs.) Laura (Elizabeth) Ingalls Wilder was descended from Richard Warren of the Mayflower, was a distant relative of President Garfield's maternal grandmother (Mrs. Mehitable Ingalls Ballou) and almost certainly shared le Mahieu forebears with President Bush. She was more closely related, however, to at least four other presidents - Pierce (a third cousin three times removed), via Bodwells; Grant (a third cousin once removed), via Delano-Hatch; Arthur (a fifth cousin once removed, twice over), via Colby Eldridge; and FDR (a fifth cousin) via Delano-Warren. John Griffith (Jack) London, Jr. was descended from Edward I, King of England (d. 1307), through Mrs. Jane Deighton Lugg Negus of Boston, sister of Taunton "ur-mother" Mrs. Frances Deighton Williams, sister-in-law of Governor Thomas Dudley of Massachusetts, and near kinswoman of Maine sponsor Sir Ferdinando Gorges and Virginia governor Sir William Berkeley. Among the agnate kin of London's mother, moreover, was movie director William Augustus Wellman. Among the New Hampshire ancestors of Louis Dearborn L'Amour, who had three Dearborn and two Sanborn lines, Hampton "ur-father" Rev. Stephen Batchelder was an ancestor of Presidents Nixon and Ford and of serial killer Herman Webster Mudgett; and Tobias Langdon, Jr. of Portsmouth, and Mary Hubbard, his wife, were the paternal grand-parents of U.S. Constitution signer John Langdon, Jr. Another illustrious first cousin several times removed was General Henry Dearborn, Jefferson's Secretary of War, grandson of John Dearborn and Abigail Batchelder below.
Outlined below, in the usual manner for this column, are the descents discussed above of these dozen "molders and mythologizers of the American West." The figure's full name and birth and death dates are followed by parents, a set of grandparents, great-grandparents, etc. backwards to ancestors mentioned above, with semi-colons separating generations and commas separating couples in the same generation. As before, "RD" indicates an ancestor of royal descent, "MP” a Mayflower passenger, "PW" a forebear shared with The Princess of Wales, “TP" an ancestor of two or three presidents (as charted in Ancestors of American Presidents (19891) and "FP" an ancestor of four or five presidents.

Some more on “Little House on the Prairie” …interesting item on Roger Lea MacBride, adopted grandson of ROSE WILDER LANE. Thanks Sandi and Raymond Ingles for forwarding this material!
“Little House on the Prairie" sequel written by Biddeford Pool resident
BIDDEFORD (AP)--Polishing off all the "Little House on the Prairie" books has long been a childhood landmark for little girls. But as the tradition moves on to the next generation, there's a new twist.
The nine-book series that inspired the popular television show has spawned a projected five-book sequel.
The original series traces the life of Laura Ingalls Wilder, her husband Almanzo and their young daughter Rose. Publisher Harper Collins says the books have been translated into 17 languages and have sold more than 60 million copies worldwide.
Roger Lea MacBride. adopted grandson and heir to Rose Wilder Lane’s estate, is continuing the story, focusing on Rose's life from age 7 in 1894 to 1906 when she leaves home as a teen-ager to start a life of her own.
Although Rose, who died in 1963, had no idea her life as a little girl would be publicized for little girls in the 90’s, MacBride said, “I think she would be tickled pink. She’d laugh and laugh and laugh.”
MacBride, 64, a summer resident of Biddeford Pool, said his first book picks up where the last of Laura's original nine leaves off.
“Little House on Rocky Ridge. continues the story of the Wilders' travels by covered wagon from the Ingalls homestead in DeSmet, S.D. to their new home in Mansfield, Mo.
Using original diaries, letters, unpublished manuscripts and memoirs to trace Rose’s early years, MacBride captures the tone and character of the "Little House on the Prairie” series.
Planning and researching the books were more enjoyable then actually writing the stories, “You know writing,” he said. “You hate to do it.”
The new, 349-page book has already reached No. 3 on Publishers Weekly July Children’s Best seller list, according to Rita Marcus of Harper Collins in New York.
“That’s the fun part,” MacBride said. “When people say “that’s a wonderful book Roger.”
MacBride met Rose Wilder Lane in Danbury, Conn. when he was 17. His father was an editor of Readers Digest and learned of Rose after condensing one of her books for the magazine.
Rose was an avid fiction writer herself and personal friends with authors such as Jack London and Sinclair Lewis.
After reading Rose’s work, MacBride’s father decided he wanted his children to meet Rose. After the original introduction in 1946, Rose and MacBride developed a friendship that lasted until Rose’s death.
“I’d weed her garden and fix fences, and we’d talk away until 1 or 2 a.m.,” MacBride said. “She was fascinating.”
Even after MacBride went away to Princeton University and Harvard Law School, he never lost touch with Rose. Later, she made MacBride her agent and lawyer, and because Rose had no children herself, she eventually made him heir to her estate.
It was not until long after Rose died that MacBride thought of writing about Rose’s life. “It never crossed either of our minds,” he said.
About 10 years ago, MacBride turned down a proposal from Harper Collins to write a 10th “Laura” book. He had edited the ninth in the original series from a manuscript Laura had left Rose. It was published after the daughter’s death.
MacBride hopes his five books will be as successful as the original series. After “Little House on Rocky Ridge” follows “Little Farm in the Ozarks,” which is due to be in bookstores by early next summer.

"I am 78 years old but very interested in the life of Laura. I am looking for her books but so far have had no luck. I'd rather have her original ones - not the new ones.

Family reunites for an early Christmas gift

PORT ALLEGANY, Pa. - Christmas came early this year for Christine Henning.
As the holiday season approaches, thoughts of family gatherings come to mind. For this mother of nine, that was nearly an impossibility. Four of her children live nearby but the other five settled out West.
It had been 30 years since the family was all together and Mrs. Henning couldn't help but wish to see her children again.
Meanwhile, the wheels were already turning on the West Coast. Her middle child, Mary Glaze of Annaheim Hills, Calif., was calling her brothers and sisters to plant the seed for a reunion.
While Christmas was around the corner, Mrs. Henning's 76th birthday was also coming and the surprise gift was one she won't soon forget.
IT WAS NO easy task getting everyone together, said Mrs. Glaze.
" I had planned on coming for her birthday and didn't feel like making the trip alone," Mrs. Glaze said. "I called Jan (her sister in Oregon) and she said she would come along."
The idea to unite all the brothers and sisters was actually that of Mrs. Glaze's husband, James.
"He said he was surprised I didn't try to bring all the children back. So, I asked Jan to call the boys and see if they'd go back if we arranged everything," Mrs. Glaze said.
Five of the children met in Chicago Thursday and flew into Buffalo together. They spent the night in Olean and then united with their other siblings to surprise their mother Friday.
"We all went knocking on her door. We thought she was going to have a heart attack," said Mrs. Glaze.
"I have a stout heart," Mrs. Henning assured. "I was shocked, though, and I just started counting kids."
ON SATURDAY, 24 family members helped Mrs. Henning celebrate her birthday at the Castle Restaurant in Olean. Among them were all of her nine children: Mariorie Ingalls, 54, of Bolivar; Bernie Henning, 52, Bradford; Virginia Hubbard, 50, Port Allegany; Janice Jones, 48, Marcola, Ore.; Mary Glaze, 46, Annaheim Hills, Calif.; Jim Henning, 45, Springfield, Ore.; Ed Henning, 44, Molalla, Ore.; Rita Crawford, 43, Earlboro, Okla.; and Rick Henning, 35, Port Allegany.
Of the children, Jim had been away the longest (22 years) and Ed hadn't been home in 12 years.
"I was very, very glad he came," Mrs. Henning said, nodding toward Jim.
The family celebrated an early Christmas Sunday. The mother's ring Mrs. Henning received as a gift will serve as a reminder of the special weekend.
"We had made jerky, loaves of bread, fudge, cookies - when we opened our luggage it looked like a food store," said Mrs. Glaze.
For the family, the three days quickly melted away. Time was spent reminiscing and revisiting a town now different from the one they remember growing up.
"This has been very pleasant. I've wanted to come home, but I never could make the time," said Jim, who finds it difficult to take time off from his job as a truck driver.
"They're all a lot different than I remember," Mrs. Hubbard said of her brothers and sisters. Then she laughed, "I even like them."
TWO OF THE children have developed an interest in genealogy and are putting together a video of the family history. "When it is completed, we will make copies so all the kids can have one," said Mrs. Glaze.
As the family busily prepared for a holiday dinner and gift giving, Mrs. Glaze looked around the room, as if to re member the moment forever.
"This will probably be the last time everyone gets together," she admitted. In some ways, she believes that is an advantage over other families, who see each other all the time and may take them for granted.
"They're not cognizant of how they walk away from each other," she said, "that that might be the last time they see each other."
