News item submitted by Mrs. Donald Ingalls: This was in a Holland NY newspaper (no date).
Can any NY people tell us who her ancestors were? Perhaps Esther Ingalls Richards will receive a copy of the newsletter, and write to me at the above address. Congratulations, Esther, on your journey--70-mile on foot from Holland to Stevens Mills, Steuben Co NY.
Woman celebrates 90 years with 70-mile walk in stages
HOLLAND (AP) - A few months after Esther Ingalls Richards turned 90, she headed for home--beginning a gradual, 70-mile journey on foot to the house where she was born in the tiny Steuben County hamlet of Stevens Mills.
"I've walked every day all my life and I’ve always wanted a long one," she said last week after one leg of the trek back to her childhood home.
Richards, who turned 90 March 25, is driven home to Holland in eastern Erie County after each leg of the trip, then returns the next day to pick up where she left off. she was to Letchworth State Park the "Grand Canyon of the East," which falls near the midpoint of the trip She hopes to finish by June 9, a two-week trip in all.
A family reunion will held at the old homestead in Stevens Mills once Richards arrives.
Richards, a one-time schoolteacher whose husband died three years ago, said the backing of people along her route has been satisfying.
"It's been wonderful. It's just inspiring how people rally around," she said. "A lady came barrelling out of her house, said she was just reading about me, couldn't believe it. Real sweet lady."
Richards' support team consists of her daughter, Jeannette Wilbur, who generally follows in a car, and various other backers, including people who have given her rides up hills in antique cars.
“This is something she really wants to do but I was concerned about her going up the hills," Wilbur said.
Saturdays are days of rest and church-going for Richards, a Seventh-day Adventist. Today she is scheduled to be at the southern end of Letchworth State Park from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.
If the weather is right, she may also take a glider ride in Dansville on Wednesday, according to her nephew's wife, Catherine Ingalls. Ingalls and her husband, Eric, live in the Stevens Mills house where Richards was born.
Stevens Mills, so small it does not appear on the state Department of Transportation's wall-size map, is along state Route 21 between Fremont and Hornell in northwestern Steuben County.

OBITUARIES - 1947
Mrs. Amy Clara STOUFF WASHBURN b 28 Aug 1870 d 26 July 1947 at Webster, WI. Born at Rock Elm Center, Pierce Co WI. For 13 years she was married to Charles Baker. During this time she was assistant mail carrier and stage coach driver at Eau Galle, WI. On Dec 20,1905 she married to Guy Washburn, in Spooner. During most of their life together they lived near Webster, running the resort at Yellow Lake. After her husband's death in 1947 she sold the resort and moved to Webster. Nieces of her bro Robert Stouff who attended the services were: Mrs. Amy McLeod of Red Wing, MN and Mrs. Ruby Schaeffer of Elk Grove, CA. Other mourners included nieces and nephews of her half-brother LAFAYETTE CLOUGH, and her sister, Minnie Bushey: Mrs. Ella Bush, Spooner; Richard Phillips, Gordon, WI; Guy Phillips, Theodore Phillips of Janesville, WI; Robert Phillips, Spooner, Mrs. Mae Johnson, Minong, WI, Joseph Bushey, Redwood City, CA....
Amy Clara STOUFF WASHBURN was a daughter of LYDIA INGALLS CLOUGH STOUFF, dau. of LANSFORD WHITING INGALLS. The obituary states that Lafayette Clough was her half-brother.
CLARIFICATION OF LANSFORD WHITING INGALLS FAMILY BIBLE RECORD V2-1, page 49, Ingalls Inquirers ISAIAH CLOUGH and ISAIAH LAFAYETTE CLOUGH b 1857 d 1893 are the same person. LYDIA LOUISE INGALLS b 1838 md. 1) ISAIAH CLOUGH, had one son LAFAYETTE; 2) Married JOSEPH STOUFF and had three children: MINNIE, AMY, AND ROBERT.
The record of LAFAYETTE has been confusing as apparently Lydia and her son moved in with her folks and the census records put him down as Lafayette Clough Ingalls and their mistake gave Lansford and Laura another son. After Lydia and Lafayette moved out, the census records lost track of Lafayette. Thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Rex Phillips for aiding us with this research problem!

Robert E. Phillips of Beloit, Wisconsin, died earlier this year without knowing he was related to the family of Laura Ingalls Wilder.
In going through his belongings, the family found pictures and other things proving the relationship.
The above picture was among the things they found. Charles Ingalls and his brother, Peter, are not on the picture. No doubt they had moved West before it was taken. Laura's aunts, Polly and Docia, had gone West by that time, too.
In the center front row are Laura's grandparents, Laura and Lansford Ingalls. Lydia is on the left in the front row and Ruby is at the far right. In the back row are Laura's uncles, James, George and Hiram.
Mr. Phillips was a grandson of Lydia Ingalls, who married Joseph Stouff.

Query submitted by Anne Robinson: Need additional info on parents of SUSANNA INGALLS m JOHN BROWN in Thornton, NY 3 Mar 1785, that she was of "Campton, NH" (Campton is abt three miles from Thornton). Burleigh says that TIMOTHY INGALLS JR was b in Campton. LDS film #15,327 "NH, Grafton Co, Thornton, Vital Records" lists the ch of JOHN BROWN and SUSANNA INGALLS and gives her death date as 18 March 1809. The same film lists a death of SARAH INGALLS as follows: SARAH INGALS, consort of ____INGALS d 28 March AD 1802. Is this SARAH mother of SUSANNA?
Little Gen and Family History of Maine, says (under BROWN) "IV JOHN (3) only so of MOSES and ELIZABETH (BROWN) BROWN was b 4 Sept 1755 in Plymouth, and resided in Thornton, NH where he m 4 Mar 1785, SUSANNA (or HANNAH) INGALLS, prob. a dau. of TIMOTHY INGALLS of Chester, Plymouth and Thornton, NH."
Another reference states that TIMOTHY's w was SARAH and lists quite a few ch but no SUSANNA.
It maybe coincidence that TIMOTHY INGALLS JR was m to BATHSHEBA WORCESTER and SUSANNA (INGALLS) BROWN' sister-in-law, HANNAH BROWN was m to NOAH WORCESTER, BATHSHEBA'S first cousin.
Would like to verify a connection between SUSANNA and TIMOTHY, whose lineage is known.

ENGLISH RESEARCH REGARDING THE INGALLS FAMILY
OF LINCOLNSHIRE, ENGLAND, AND LYNN, MASSACHUSETTS
-- ROSALYN DAVENPORT GIBBS -
May I preface this work by saying that I was fortunate enough to live at RAF Scampton, five miles north of Lincoln, the county seat of Lincolnshire, for twenty seven months. My husband was a USAF Major on duty with the Royal Air Force. We are both amateur genealogists, and we devoted as much time as we could to genealogical research. Most of the records referred to herein were housed at The Castle, cared for by the Lincolnshire Archives Society, Lincoln. Because of the length of time that we lived in the area and the proximity of the records, perhaps I had the opportunity to research them more thoroughly than is usually the case. It is most difficult to read the original records as the style of writing, spelling, and manner of forming the individual letters differs greatly from the modern form. Also, the year’s records often began from the Feast of St. Michael and All Angels (September 29th) rather than Lady Day or the Feast of the Blessed Virgin (March 25th), as one might imagine.

ROBERT INGOLLS
The Ingalls brothers who emigrated to Lynn, Massachusetts, were Edmund and Francis. Their father, as he proves by his will (Appendix I and II, was Robert Ingolls, whose brother was Henry Ingolls. The only clue I found to the parentage of Robert and Henry Ingolls is a bequest to "my father Ingols" in the will made by Henry Ingolls, 12 February 1613/14 (Appendix III and IV). The will made by Robert Ingolls, 16 July 1617, makes no mention of his father Ingols.
Robert Ingolls was a yeoman, in those days a step below a gentleman and a step above a laborer, a small landholder in a very class structured society. A yeoman owned property worth at least forty shillings and was qualified to vote.1 For some reason in Lincolnshire at the time there was a dearth of members of the class of gentlemen as compared to the rest of England. Yeomen made wills very often; there are few wills made by gentlemen, because there were very few gentlemen; and it was always necessary for the nobility to dispose of their property. I do not remember seeing any wills of the laboring classes in Lincolnshire in that time period. There were many wills of widows. Most wills were signed by a mark.
Robert Ingolls lived in Skirbeck Quarter, a part of Boston, at the time of his death. The original Bishop's Transcripts of the parish of St. Nicholas, Skirbeck, were searched. The Parish Registers of this church have been lost until the year 1661. The first mention

of Robert Ingoll was as a churchwarden in the years 1590 and 1591 ("From ye Feast of St. Mychell the archangel 1590 unto ye same feast 1591" and "From ye Feast of St. Michaell 1591 untill ye same feast 1592”). The Bishop's Transcripts did not show any previous records for Robert Ingolls, so I began searching the original Bishop's Transcripts for many of the surrounding towns.
The printed record of early Parish Registers, including a comparison of Bishop's Transcripts for the same period exists for the town of Boston, Lincolnshire, for the years 1557 to 1599 and 1599 to 1638.1 Copies exist both at the Society of Genealogists, London, and at The Castle, Lincoln. The only mention of an Ingolls until 1599 was the baptism of Francisca filia Rob'ti Inganalls (the variation in the Bishop's Transcripts reads Ignolde of Skirbeck).2 The Latin shows that this was a daughter, Frances, baptized 16 January 1595/96. I have wondered if this may have been a mistake on the part of the recorder and may have referred to Robert Ingolls' son, Francis.
Since this too showed that earlier records of Robert Ingolls may have existed elsewhere, I then turned to many of the original Bishop's Transcripts of the area. The county of Lincolnshire is divided into three areas, known as: Parts of Lindsey, Parts of Kesteven, and Parts of Holland. The original Bishop's Transcripts which I searched in Parts of Holland were:
1 The Parish Registers of Boston 1557-1599, 1599-1638v C. 4. Foster (ad.), (Vols. I and II; Horncastle: W. K. Morton & Sons, 1914 and 1915).

As these records are so old, many of the entries were illegible. Many years were missing. In 1597 the transcripts were written on parchment rather than paper. It is not surprising that the earlier records are often not in good condition.
Fortunately, while studying the Bishop's Transcripts for the parish of St. Leodegar'e, Wyberton, I found a name for which I was searching: From the Feast of St. Michaell the archangell 1585 unto the said feast of saint Michaell 1586, Edmund the sonne of Robert inggold and Elizabeth his wiffe was baptised the xxvj daye of the month of June. Unfortunately, these Bishop's Transcripts were in very bad shape. They began in 1561 and the years 1563-1565, 1566–

1575, 1577-1585, and 1627 were missing. Many of the other years were so badly stained and torn that I was unable to read them. The possible additional references to the Ingolls family for which I, was searching were:

Obviously, I wanted to know more about the Wyberton records. The Parish Registers for much of England were microfilmed during the early days of World War II for safekeeping. I had consulted some of
p. 4

these in Norwich, County Norfolk, and had been very disappointed. Not only were the early registers damaged, but the microfilming was of very poor quality. Nevertheless, the records of Wyberton were available from 1538 and I felt they must be consulted. In order to view the microfilm of a Parish Register one must first have the permission, usually written, of the present vicar of the parish. I wrote to Revd. R. J. Davison, Wyberton Rectory, and by return mail I received his kind permission.
Again I was warned by the staff of the Lincolnshire Archives Society that these microfilms were generally of very poor quality. I was amazed when I turned on the light of the reader to find the clearest writing and the best microfilming that I had seen in England. It was obvious that the incumbent vicar of Wyberton in 1597 had complied with the Act of 1597 and the previous registers were copied on parchment with a fine hand -- at least for the marriages. The baptisms and burials had only been partially copied and partially left in their original form. It is my guess that the vicar had hired a copyist to rewrite the records that were damaged at that time. After 1597 the writing is the usual quality of the time.
The name Ingoll (in its varying forms) was recorded.

This is the only evidence I was able to find concerning Robert Ingolle until he was a churchwarden, 1590-1591, at St. Nicholas, Skirbeck. Now we know that he lived in Wyberton at least from April or May, 1580, baptism of Rose (?), until at least 16 June 1586
I was unable to untangle the different Henry Ingolls. Robert Ingolls refers to two Henrys in his will, one his brother, and one a "cousin".
The Bishop's Transcripts of Skirbeck were again signed by Robert Ingolls with his mark in 1602. There was a badly torn entry under the burials in July 1605, reading: "__se the daughter of Robert Ingall". Robert Ingolls was not again mentioned until his burial, 1617/18, reading: "Rob Iengals, March 22". His will (Appendix I and II) was made 16 July 1617 and probated in Lincoln 27 April 1618.

The inventory of his belongings was made 24 March 1617/18. (Appendix V).
I was disappointed not to have found more about Robert Ingolls. Such a churchgoing person was sure to have had his sons Robert and Frances baptized somewhere. He must have married his wife, Elizabeth in her own parish.

EDMUND INGALLS
The lack of information in the Skirbeck Bishop's Transcripts led me to search farther for Robert Ingolls, but satisfied me about his eldest son, Edmund. I almost missed Edmund's marriage, as the spelling of everything by the incumbent recorder was extremely bad. His name was written: "Edmon Inoilge".
The information, not before mentioned, relevant to the Ingolls surname in the Bishop's Transcripts of St. Nicholas, Skirback, beginning 1 October 1561, is as follows:
