Family history newsletter started in 1984 for the purpose of sharing information on the surnames INGALLS, INGALL, INGELL, INGLES, INGLIS, INGLE, ENGEL, and variant spellings. Published by Arlene Ingalls Schrader . . . .

REUNIONS - Are you planning a reunion, or perhaps wishing that you could attend a gathering of Ingalls kin? I attended my first Ingalls reunion at Shelby, MI last summer, and thoroughly enjoyed it. The time was all too short, and we are planning on spending more time with cousins this year. My connection with this line is not direct lineage; one could say "kissing cousins", but my interest in family history made me want to pursue the quest for how are we related, etc. The Frank Ingalls descendants enthusiastically shared their memories, as well as the current generations activities.

For information purposes, I will list the reunions of past years, with a name for contacting for current information. Let me know of corrections, additions, etc., so that we can carry a Reunion Calendar in March, 1987 issue.

(1984) Opal, So. Dakota, July 8 - contact Mable Stomprud, Mud Butte, SD.

Graham. Washington, July 13. 14. 15 - contact Dean Simar, Reno, NV

*Steuben Co., New York - August 5 - Gertrude Smith, Webster, NY

(1985) Minneosta - Descendants of ABBIE M. INGALLS, and RALPH ORR. Clarissa, MN - contact Dean Simar.

(1986) Shelby, MI - Descendants of FRANK M. INGALLS and IDELLA INGALLS.

*Steuben Co., NY - descendants of JAMES INGALLS -- met in 1985 at Avon, NY - contact Geraldine Baylor, Corfu, NY. This is an annual affair.

Thoughts to have fun with - How many persons would be interested in a trip to Skirbeck, Lincolnshire, England? OR a greyhound excursion to DeSmet and Mansfield? OR Lynn, Massachusetts and Salem? We have several areas in this country that would be of common interest to INGALLS kin.... gatherings could be by regions, not necessarily in the summer season. Some of our ancestors lived in Canada and this is an area that needs additional research. Please give us your ideas, pros and cons .. perhaps some of you have had experience in planning such events ... write to Linda Wright . . . .

The following is an article abstracted from The Garden Club News, December, 1985 (Lincoln, NEB) featuring LOLA FLACK, Lincoln, NEB. Lola descends from Edmund1, Henry2  Samuel3, Samuel4, Timothy5, Jonathon6, Samuel7, Lansford Whiting8, Laura Ladocia9, Lena10, Lola . Aunt "Docia" and children, LENA AND JEAIN (GENE) are mentioned in the story "By the Shores of Silver Lake” by Laura Ingalls Wilder. Lola contributed the stories in last issue of LAURA LADOCIA and daughter, LENA. "For all her hardships, LENA never talked about it - only the good things. She didn't know she was descended from Kings and Queens, Charlemagne and Wm. the Conqueror (Delano descendants). Docia, when she stayed with us in the winter, smoked her cob pipe setting by the stove so the smoke went up."

LOLA FLACK will be celebrating her birthday, August 12. Congratulations Lola on your 86th birthday: Lola notes that she has lived on the same street since 1936.  Keep working on the "wives" of JONATHON - we feel he had 3 wives but have not uncovered primary proof.

GARDENER OF THE MONTH (photo omitted)

Lola Flack is a native Nebraskan. Perhaps  I am the original "farmer's daughter" who met the "traveling man" because my husband M. L. Flack courted me while he was organizing a Dairy Herd Improvement Association in my county in the early 20's.

From the farm I attended University, taught school and married. I always planned on going back to the farm but such was not to be, for my husband died in 1944. With two young children I went back to teaching which continued until my retirement in 1986.

I always had a garden--vegetables which I canned and for the family's use and only a few flowers. But when I was left alone I gardened only flowers. I have a succession of bloom from the early snowdays till the last of the mums.

Through the years my garden has been the source of the best kind of therapy - it has helped me in times of grief, depression, illness and loneliness -all troubles disappear when 1"m working in my garden.

I'm especially fond of blue flowers - I try anything blue. Whenever I hear of a new one I try to find plants. This year it was Tourenia which I found to be most satisfactory providing blue all summer long. (I shall get twice as many next year.) And I tried to find Phacalia but had no luck.

I enjoy Garden Club - I always take plants in the spring for the sale and in the Fall I bring Lunaria for the Fall Festival. There is a splendid fellowship among the members, all having the same general interest.

AL MUNTER, 9645 Old Hy 61W, Duluth, MN 55810 writes "By a former marriage I was son-in-law to ANNE INGELS THOMPSON 1927-30. Any relation to Laura Ingalls Wilder?" Anne Ingels was married to Joseph Thompson. Anne was 49 years old in 1927. They lived in Grand Fords, ND. I was married to their daughter Nellie from 1927 to 1930. "I would like to have Alma Abrahamson recognized in your newsletter. Alms is a very nice lady who is a tour guide in DeSmet SD. We've been corresponding with her for some time and finally took the trip in August 1985 to the Ingalls (Charles) homes. We exchanged information with her while in DeSmet. Some copies of what we had are now on display there. Alma is tracing all of the Ingalls lines now. She is no relation but is full of information, always sending us names of people to write to. We received a booklet from her tracing Laura's lineage back to Adam. I thought this was fantastic as I shared our lineage back to Mark Anthony at our west coast reunion in "84" at Graham, WA that we received from Rose White. I vowed then that in two years I would trace our family back to Adam. I received a sheet that traced back from Adam to Kenneth II, king of Scotland, his father being Malcolm I, King of Scotland. Sitting at the kitchen table I told Dean we have to go the library, if there is a Malcolm I there should be others, glancing at the book from Alma it was right before my eyes. I was so excited I told Dean look its right here I have the tie through the Bible to now. I now have two ties to Adam not just one."

Thanks, Dean and Velda Simar for sharing this lineage with others.

Ruth Christiansen, Frederic, WI contributed the following articles.

JOHN M. (MOSES) INGALLS. Whitehall. Wisconsin - abstracted from article in The Whitehall Times, June 13, 1940 sent to RC by county historian, Whitehall, WI.

"JOHN INGALLS - His 85th Birthday - John M. (Moses?) Ingalls observed his 85th birthday on Monday, June 10, 1940...has been a resident of Trempealeau county for 84 years, and he has lived in the state of Wisconsin his entire life. He has enjoyed and appreciated the opportunity of seeing the country develop during these years and has a store of knowledge regarding the development of the county in particular.

He came with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Ingalls from Rock Prairie, Walworth County, WI when not yet a year old, coming here in a covered wagon. The family lived in the wagon until they had built a home and it was in this wagon that Mr. Ingalls learned to walk.

His sister, Mrs. Ella Romander, has lived with him since the death of Mrs. Ingalls, which occurred seven years ago, June 1.

His immediate family includes Mr. and Mrs. G. A. Saecker, and John Saecker of La Crosse; Mr. and Mrs. Hilman Amundsen of La Crosse; Dr. and Mrs. Anton Vold and Evangeline and Anton, Jr., and Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Rhode of Whitehall."

PATTEN. Alice notes in her letter, "ADELINE INGLES PHILLIPS died when I was about 5 years old (early 1950's) and was the matriarch of my family for years."

Submitted by Mrs. Dean Simar: "Would like to have contact with anyone who has done research in England on the INGALLS ancestors." Submitted b Della H. Kramlich : "Would like to correspond with anyone of the Isaac (7) (B1801) line. He was born 17 Dec 1795 Blue Hill Maine, married Sarah (Sally) CARTER. Had children: George, Sarah, A. Judson, Joanna, Mary, Newton, Oscar and Lester. Went to Illinois then to Pepin Co., WI. Lived there in 1860-1880's. Lived in Jefferson Co., PA in 1850 census."

"It was through an old bible that took my line back to Isaac (7) and Sarah thus connecting me with all the line of Ingalls in Charles Burleigh's book."

Della, to answer your question about format to follow to submit group sheets for the supplement. See page 110-111, March, 1985 issue for group sheet and generation chart. These could be copied, or use the same format on a plain paper. The deadline for group sheets is December, 1986.

Submitted b Mr. Richard L. Baker: WILLIAM WALTER INGALLS b 1 Jan 1872 Rock Elm, WI died 22 May 1916 (where WIS?) married MYRTLE WELLS (where? when?) Need ancestors of Myrtle's and her birth and death dates.

MARY ELIZABETH INGALLS b 6 or 16 Aug 1874 Rock Elm, WIS d 5 July 1923 married (1) Neil HALL (when? where?} (2) John EDWARDS (when? where?) (3) Harry PAUL or PAULS (when? where?). Need birth and death dates all three husbands.

Mr. Baker writes that his grandfather, Lansford and Charles Ingalls (PA) were brothers. "My mother was Martha Esther Ingalls."

Editor's note: To answer the question, how I fit into the family - my ancestor JONATHON married to Abigail CLEVELAND was a brother of Samuel who married Margaret DELANO.

Submitted by Mary Lou Boegehold: "A JAMES INGOLS married Hannah ____. I have no dates for James but Hannah was born 1744 d 27 Dec 1830. Their children include BENJAMIN INGOLS (our ancestor) and another son, JOHN CALL INGOLS as well as two daughters. Now to my thoughts: JAMES #133 (Burleigh) married JOANNA CALL, dau of JOHN CALL. JAMES was born in Boston. My family of INGOLS were all in Boston. I found the marriage of JAMES' dau JOANNA #401 and she spelled the name INGOLS as my family did.

"I have no proof but I think my JAMES, father of BENJAMIN AND JOHN CALL INGOLS must be the same JAMES shown as #402. The name JOHN CALL INGOLS seems too obvious not to have a connection...he may be named for his great grandfather. The children of JAMES #402 shown in the book were born 1769-1773. BEN J. AND JOHN CALL came later 1780-1784. Did ABIGAIL die and HANNAH was a second wife? If you have any information along this line, I would like to hear from you.

Submitted by Mrs. Dorothy Lee Ingalls: In visiting the Lynn Historical Society she learned about an "Ingalls Association and an Ingalls newsletter". To my knowledge, the Association that was started ca. 1930 is no longer active. The Ingalls Inquirer was started in 1984 by one person to enable all researchers of the family name to share their letters, records, and notes with others. To date this is still not an association. The subscription information is on the back cover page for your reference. Dorothy also states that she has many Ingalls records and will gladly help anyone that wishes to know more of their ancestry. (Please enclose a self-addressed stamped envelope when asking for assistance from ANYONE, especially if you hope to get a response).

Dorothy enclosed her lineage: Edmund, Robert, Nathaniel, Henry, Amos, Henry, Charles, Joseph, Joseph, Edward, Edward II, Edward III. Edward II married Dorothy G. Lee 16 July 1923. Thank you for sharing your roots. This information will be useful for the upcoming supplement to Burleigh's edition. (References Burleigh #453

FROM THE MAILBOX

Alice Finley asks: What is the Surname index and what are the numbers after each name? Answer: The Surname index is a surname list of those mentioned in the current issue, followed by the page number the name will appear. Second, some surnames in the issue have a code after them. Answer: This code (number) refers to the system used by Burleigh in his genealogy of the INGALLS family and covers only those persons placed in the history by 1902.

Thanks for this very important clarification of the index codes, it will become a regular part of each issue. Also, the initials-- AIS after articles indicates that they are contributed by Arlene Ingalls Schrader. Alice, your query will be found in the Query Section this issue. Welcome to the kinship and continue to write!

Linda Wright writes: "I have joined the Visiting Friends, Inc. I do my own version on my trips but maybe someday I will try visiting others near places I want to do certain research. Thought some of the readers would find this interesting. The readers wouldn't have to go through it to come to my place, just have to try and catch me home!" Linda is a busy gal, and thoroughly committed to family history .. she is responsible for the reprinting of Burleigh's 1903 edition of The Genealogy and History on the Ingalls Family in America  . . .

Editor's note: This reprint is of excellent quality, my desk copy really takes a beating -- my only complaint, Linda, the margins are too small for all my notes!

Bev Butterfield writes to Linda: "I am so disgusted with myself ..before I found out about the Ingalls Inquirer, I sent to Higginson Genealogical Books Pub. House, Mass. for a similar copy at $4. Paperback - 8 1/2 x 11 1/2 copy papers. Lousy picture reproduction. I could not believe your book could be the same one for $16. I could just kick myself. Thank you. The book is excellent. The packaging was torn when it arrived, but the book was not damaged. I hope no one else gets taken ...Put me on your list for a copy of the update (supplement). Thanks again." Signed/ Bev Butterfield

Linda also wishes to remind all who are planning to submit family group sheets to be included in the supplement to the 1903 Burleigh edition, that anyone new after December 1986 will be hard pressed to be included. If you have any questions, contact either of us, and we will attempt to respond.

Submit your direct lineage to your INGALLS ancestor first. You may submit additional family group sheets on your siblings, children, parents, grandparents, etc., for a more complete history. Please use one sheet for each married person (family group sheet sample in March, 1986 issue).

Ruth Christiansen identified the people in the picture on page 102, November 1985 issue as HIRAM INGALLS, at left; boy in wagon in foreground is adopted grandson, LEO; H. LEROY (with fiddle) son, and wife, ELIZABETH. Hiram donated two acres of his own land for a community burying ground (old Orange Cemetery near Webster, WI) where his family is buried. His parents and brother, George are buried there. Hiram was postmaster at Dongola, Burnett Co., WI. The two doors on the house were part living quarters and post office.

On page 114, March, 1986 issue, is an item on ELEAZER STILLMAN INGALLS. Among his children listed in Burleigh is CHARLES LIVINGSTON born 1852.

In the book, "Long Ships Passing" by Walter Havighurst, page 109, begins a several-page account of this 18-year old Charles who became a hero during the Peshtigo (Menominee, MI forest fire. This was on the same day as the Chicago fire, and missed being the headlines of that day.

Ruth Christiansen has been involved in research on the Ingalls family primarily as a free-lance writer, but now she has discovered she has an INGALLS ancestor: "MARY INGALLS, dau of Edmund the Emigrant, married my ancestor, John Eaton 3rd. My New England families settled in same localities as Ingalls." RC Welcome to the kinship: Thanks for your contributions to the newsletter, Ruth.
