DARE DEVIL STUNT FLIER TAKES WOLF FOR RIDE ON TOP PLANE Gladys Ingle on the top wing of a Curtis "Jenny" with a WILD WOLF! Probably sometime in the 1920's. (photo omitted)

"GLADYS INGLE, 25-year old stunt flier, keeping off a wild wolf which she took for a plane ride. Someone in Hollywood made her a bet that she would not take a dog up with her but she went him one better and borrowed a wolf from the zoo. When the plane was in mid-air and the blindfold taken from the wolf's eyes, he began snapping at her, but she kept him off with a whip. Finally the wolf took a look over the side of the plane and from that time on became very friendly."

Cousins Meet for First Time - 1986

RUSSELL, JAMES AND FRANK INGALLS 3rd Cousins (photo omitted)

Shelby, Michigan -- 59th year of Ingalls Reunion of FRANK M. INGALLS branch (10) Phyletus (09) Aaron (8) B1580

James Arthur Ingalls sent the following story about his quest for family history.

"My name is James Arthur Ingalls, I come from southwestern NY state in the area of Bolivar, Cuba and Olean. I was born 23 Sept 1922 in Abbotts, in the township of Ischua, a small community north of Cuba Lake, where the lake now stands covers what was once the INGALLS farm of AARON INGALLS b 1802 d 1886. My father was VIRGIL PHYLETUS INGALLS and my grandfather was BENJAMIN PHYLETUS INGALLS. BENJAMIN was born

in Hixton, Wisconsin, the son of PHYLETUS and LYDIA ANN SVITH, who were both from Cuba, NY. LYDIA was PHYLETUS 2nd wife, his first wife was LUCY ANN BOOTH who was born in Elmira, NY and lived in the Cuba area. LUCY had five children four boys and one girl, they were FRED, ADIN, SAMUEL, FRANK and OLIVE. LYDIA had six children; AARON, BENJAMIN, ELIZABETH, EMMA JANE, AMELIA and CHARLES. AMELIA and ELIZABETH both died as small children.

"As a small boy I remember going to the INGALLS reunion with my parents and hearing about the INGALLS relatives in Michigan and Ohio. I also remember stories about the "Big Five" going to Michigan to see their relatives. I know now that the "Big Five" were Grandfather Benjamin, his sister EMMA JANE and her husband FRANK FISK, also BENJAMIN's half brother SAMUEL and his wife ANNA.

"Our grandsons  . . . were asking questions about their background that we could not answer, so my wife PAULINE HILL INGALLS (Polly) started to check into our family history. We attended an INGALLS get together called by LINDA INGALLS WRIGHT.

-148-

3RD COUSINS MEET - 1986 - continued -

“We were told about the "Ingalls Inquirer" published by ARLENE INGALLS SCHRADER of DeWitt, Michigan. We wrote to Arlene and found that we were coming down from the same family of EDMUND who came to this country in 1629 from Lincolnshire, England and was the first white settler in the city of Lynn, MA, they also settled the city of Swampscott, and Andover, MA. Edmund has five boys and his brother Francis who came here at the same time has four girls.

"From ARLENE and LINDA we learned about the INGALLS reunion in Shelby, MI. POLLY and I on July 28, 1986 started for Shelby to meet PHYLETUS' other family in the MI area. LINDA notified us that she was going to be in Shelby getting information for her book. She had put us in touch with FRANK and FRANCES INGALLS (third cousins) and we were invited to stay with them upon arrival in Shelby. We arrived about 1 p.m. on July 31st and spent the next several hours over dinner talking and looking at pictures getting our families in the right perspective. FRANK and FRANCES took us for a ride around the area and to meet his brother RUSSELL and wife FLORENCE. When FRANK, RUSSELL and I were together the look-alike was uncanny, anyone would know that we were related. The next day Linda drove in and to our surprise she had cousin ARLENE with her, you can bet we all had a good time talking about our families. That night we stayed at FRANK and FRANCES cottage on Upper Silver Lake, it is known as the "INGAL00" as it looks like an Igloo from the North country, an unusual cottage on a beautiful lake. That afternoon and evening the INGALLS clan started to gather..talk and food was aplenty. A trip to the sand dunes and a boat ride wound up the day.

"The next day, August 2, was the reunion and INGALLS families both young and old came together for more food and a good time was had by all. POLLY and I know that our work and time spent had not been in vain, the INGALLS FAMILY was alive and well. We have discovered in our search of the family that we are related to three presidents GRANT, GARFIELD and ROOSEVELT. We are also the 5th cousins of LAURA INGALLS WILDER who wrote the Little House on the Prairie. CHARLES or PA as he was called is also from Cuba, NY.

"We want to extend our thanks to all our cousins and especially FRANK and FRANCES for their hospitality.

"If anyone knows anything about FRED and/or ADIN'S family, who were also coming down from PHYLETUS and LUCY ANN, we would like very much to hear from you. These families are a void in our research."

Sincerely, JAMES A. INGALLS

CORRECTIONS

March 1986 Ingalls Inquirer, p. 114, para 2 – CHARLES F. LIVINGSTON was a boyhood friend of ELEAZER S. INGALLS. Notation on p 142 of July 1986 Ingalls Inquirer seems to indicate this as his son. He did have the son mentioned in Burleigh whom I presume was named after his boyhood friend who helped him build the press.

The following letter is a "journal" of Linda Wright's travel in 1986 in quest of INGALLS Roots and Relatives ...

Dear Brother, Father, Aunts, Uncle, and especially COUSINS of all distances,

THANKS from the bottom of my heart for all the kindness: and hospitality you showed me, and the FOOD you fed me, and the bed and bath you let me use on my 5500 mile journey.

I had a great time and enjoyed every minute of it. I did not uncover any new clues in my lines, but I did manage to meet some new Ingalls "cousins". I wish this country were a little smaller so maybe we could all meet at a central place before heaven.

Would like to recap, briefly, my travels to share some of my fun with you.

I began about 6 am on July 10th and picked up my m-i-1 and her brother (Mary and Ben) in Cocoa. We headed for St. Simon's Island Ga. to drop off three chairs and some toys at a cousin's (Betty) house. Departed there after a short visit and headed for Longs, S.C. via Round 0, S.C. and another short visit with John and Chris (more relatives). Finally made it to Longs (Jo and Howard's). Ate, visited and went to bed.

Left Mary and Ben with Jo and Howard and I continued on towards my destination of Seaford, DE. (AL and Ann's). Went by Wilmington, N.C., stopped to see my b-1-l. Couldn't find him so I went on my way.

After just an overnight in Seaford, I went up to Wilmington, DE to get in on an ice cream festival with my dad (Fred). Spent a few days with him taking in the ice cream festival, a Frisbee (disc) tournament, then an overnight taking in Long Island and visiting his first cousin (Herbert LeMaire), seeing the back side of Miss Liberty from Liberty Island and trying very hard to find another first cousin of Fred's. No luck even though we covered old addresses, called several people on the phone (how else!), and hopped from libraries to tax offices. Whewl

After recouping a day back in Wilm., DE, I was on the road again heading for Needham, MA via Branford, CT and Westerly, RI trying to pick up more tidbits of family info.

Caught up on a little paperwork while in Needham (Con's) and enjoyed a little less hectic schedule there than I'd put on through in my past visits. Just some easy countryside riding and visiting.

-157-

July 20--After a good Sunday School lesson, I was on the road again leaving Needham and heading for a 50th wedding anniversary in Cranston, RI. (Ebba and Axel Soderberg). What a great party. The music was great and the FOOD fantastic. It was so good being able to see some long-time friends again.

More info gathering the next day on my way to Elizaville, Red Hook, and Germantown, NY via Westerly, RI, Willimantic, CT and Kent, CT.

Spent a few days in Germantown (Sue) seeing cousins (Ella, Marion, Irving), meeting cousins (Gene) and trying to track down various leads for any more clues to an elusive and evasive Ingalls/Ingols line. Still nothing to whoop and holler about.

Now a short and sweet visit to Whitehall, N.Y. (Johanna), then down to Saratoga (.Sandi) for an overnight. Sandi's husband, Dennis, drove us and one of their sons (Greg) down to Albany to see a minor league baseball game to see if I could see my cousin's (Al) stepson pitching. He (Steve) wasn't on the mound that night, but we did see him and what a surprise to see his mother and grandparents there (Patti, George and Jeannie).

On the road again, I was hoping to uncover anything in Otsego Co., N.Y. Especially in the Cherry Valley area. No luck there so continued on to Cooperstown and closed down the library there. Still nothing. No, Gene, I didn't get down to Unadilla, this time.

By now it's Sunday July 27 and I'm trucking across NY. Stopped in Avon to try to find some more cousins, but they had either moved (Betty) or were away (June). Did find Betty and had a short visit with her. Their reunion was to be the next week. Pushed onward that day until I finally arrived in Springboro, PA. (Bev). Another new cousin tracked down!! Met her dad (Paul) and got a cemetery tour of some Ingols plots. They do eventually go back to Ingalls. Those census takers really messed a lot of us up!

More visiting and sharing and I was on the move again. This time arriving a day early on Arlene's doorstep. For most of the next three days, we re-grouped our thoughts, our files, and our address list. Finally a breather. We had to get ready for the reunion in Shelby, MI. Arlene made a cake and I made a marinated salad. We were going over a day early so we could get in some real good visiting this time.

Friday Aug. 1 saw us on our way to Shelby via Rockford. We had hoped to pick up Nancy and take her with us but paper work had her tied down. On our way again, this time in one car. (We had driven two to Nancy's--left one there). We found our way to Frank and Frances Ingalls' without any problems. Guess what! We made it in time for lunch! Other cousins were there ahead of us. Jim and Polly of CT. and FL. A super mini visit and lunch by F & F and we were on our way to the Ingaloo.

If my vocabulary was any better, I could probably give you a good description of what the Ingaloo is, but it is one of those places you have to see to believe. It's a summer cottage on Upper Silver Lake (I think), built out of fiberglass and looks like an igloo but with modern conveniences. Four of us spent the night in it and I don't remember any complaints. I must have slept like a log because of all the visiting that was done during the afternoon, EATING at supper, climbing a sand dune and before supper taking a 20-person dune buggy ride around the dunes and through the shores of Lake Michigan.

Sat. Aug. 2nd and we busied ourselves for the Ingalls reunion to be held at Silver Lake State Park near Shelby, MI. Arriving shortly after eleven, we found cousin Ted had secured the pavilion for us and it wasn't too long before all the kith and kin started to arrive with FOOD in hand. Frank said the blessing and we all lined up to partake of some delicious victuals.

Arlene and I did a lot of visiting and reminded all of the newsletter and supplement. It was so nice to relax here this year instead of rushing in and rushing out like we had to do last year. We got to know cousins better and had a great time.

All too soon it was time for Arlene and me to be on the road again. This time to backtrack to Rockford so Arlene could get her car and head on to DeWitt while I stayed on for a couple of nights to visit with Nancy and Dale.

Dale and Nancy operate Rogue River Balloons (for rides) and during supper Sat. night were discussing Sunday night's ride. All of a sudden I became the extra body they were looking for and (gulp) said I would go up.

After a morning ride around the countryside, we wound up at the Olde Kent Inn for breakfast. How we busied ourselves for the rest of the day, I don't remember. I did start to get a little excited as the time drew near for us to leave for the launch site but I didn't let it show too much, I don't think! When we got to the launch site, there were already four other balloons lined up. We took our place at the end and the crew arrived to begin unfolding the balloon and getting it ready to inflate. The other rider in the balloon was Jim Headley (sp.), an ABC news correspondent to South Africa, home on holiday and this was a 40th birthday present for him by family and friends. It was his first ride too.

All of a sudden it was time to lift off. WOW. I still to this day can't believe how calm, cool and collected I was. No nervousness or butterflies. I did hang on most of the time, but Dale (our fantastic pilot) said it wasn't a white-knuckler. I moved around in the basket to view all sides. We did treetopping and lake hopping. To top it all off, Jim was having it video-taped and we got to see it after at the champagne party. I still can't believe it did it.

Guess what? I'm on the road again, this time heading for Indianapolis by way of Ft. Wayne, IN. I mainly just wanted to say that I’ve been to Ft. Wayne so did some busy work there for about two hours. Still can’t seem to turn over any new leaves.

Arriving in Indy, I homed in on one of the libraries I was familiar with and made a phone call to let Cousin Bob Ingalls, Jr. know I was finally on the scene. Wound up talking to his mom, Osie Alice McDowell Ingalls Clark, who graciously invited me out to the manor to join her and her husband, John Wallace Clark, Bob for supper. Alice didn't let on to Bob that I was in town until I showed up at the manor for supper.

Conversation centered around genealogy (for some reason) as I was meeting a lady who has done genealogy work for I think, longer than I've been around (thought I'd tell, huh?) I had already run into some of Alice's work in Cooperstown so I knew she had done a lot of work, but I wasn't prepared for the volume of work or time that she had put into her "projects". Another WOW. Bob and I got our itinerary set for the next day and he picked me up and we headed for the Indianapolis State Library. I was introduced to some hardworking, behind-the-scenes people who have to really be dedicated to this field.

Bob and I were put in a back room (I can hear the oohs and aahs) to have more privacy (there they go again) to do some in-depth studying and research to see if we couldn't turn over any new leaves. Alice didn't leave a stone unturned in her research and like one of my lines, she still has a semi-elusive relative who hasn't cooperated by leaving enough solid evidence lying around. So the search goes on.....

After another evening meal with the Clarks and Bob and a nice relaxing visit, I was ready to hit the hay and let my poor brain try to grasp all it had been through the last three weeks. The morning would see me on the road again, this time heading for Chattanooga, TN. (actually Hixson) and a few days to be spent with my Aunt Nat.

While in Hixson, I straightened out some of my files and did a few odd jobs while getting ready for my last fling before arriving home in Orlando. Left Hixson on Sat. morning heading for Meridian, MS. I was going to the 2nd Deep South Gathering of the Carmichael Clan and Sat. night was the CEILDH (kay-lee). For those of you who haven't found Scottish blood in your lines yet (on Bobby's side), a ceildh is a party with professional or non-professional entertainment. No. I did not demonstrate my championship haggis hurling form. The room wasn't big enough!!

Sun. Aug. 10 At the Carmichael Reunion in Carmichael, MS. The food was fantastic. Naturally, I ate like I was the whole army. I also helped to sell Carmichael memorabilia. It was good seeing friends that had made the first trip to Scotland three years ago and others again that had made the second one; this past June.

Mon. Aug. 11. HOME SWEET HOME. Now maybe I can get down to business!
